A circular walk in the Black Forest near Hausach

A very pretty hike in the Black Forest, 50 km north-east of Freiburg (Freiburg im Breisgau) and 60 km
north of Lake Titisee.
You can admire the countryside and forest scenery, as well as the town of Hausach with its castle and beautiful traditional houses.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park at the water tower at the end of Kreuzbergstrasse, 77756 Hausach.
The trail is marked with a pretty sign featuring five red dots. The signs say “Hausacher Bergsteig”.

(S/E) From the water tower at the car park, take the first path on the right which climbs into the forest. It follows the Abenteuerweg (adventure trail) with activities for children: walking along a cable, balancing on a fallen tree. At the first junction, take a detour along the path on the right to reach St Wendemius’ Chapel.

(1) A very beautiful chapel with a superb view of Hausach. Retrace your steps and continue along the path to the right. Cross the forest track and continue down into the valley. After a hairpin bend to the left, cross the meadow.

(2) Take the road on the right, cross the Hausachbach stream and, after 200m, turn onto the path on the left.
Walk along a meadow then through the forest.

(3) At the crossroads, turn left onto the Hansjakobusweg (St James’ Way).

(4) At the crossroads, continue left onto the Hansjakobusweg and left again at the next crossroads.

(5) At the junction, leave the Hansjakobusweg by turning left. Pass two paths on the right, then turn right. Further on, keep left and pass two paths on the right.

(6) Turn left at this junction in the middle of the meadow and enter the forest.

(7) At the hairpin bend, turn onto the path on the left. Head down into the forest. The path becomes tarmac. Shortly after the hairpin bend, leave the road and follow the path on the right which runs along the valley through the forest and then crosses a meadow.

(8) Cross the Hauserbachstrasse road and follow the small road opposite. Admire the beautiful Hauserbach Chapel.
After 300m, leave the road and follow the path to the left. At the next junction, take the hairpin bend to the left, then 400m further on, take the hairpin bend to the right. Cross the next path.

(9) Turn left at the Haseneckle junction (the ‘hare’s corner’). 200m further on, cross the path and continue through the forest.

(10) Turn right onto the forest road and immediately afterwards left, continuing along the contour line.

(11) At the crossroads, turn left then immediately right to follow a small path through the undergrowth that runs alongside the forest road. Cross the forest road at the hairpin bend and continue through the forest. You will reach the Schmids Wandereckle crossroads with an information sign (in German).

(12) Follow the path opposite. You’ll reach the forest road and follow it for 50m. Turn left and, 50m further on, take the hairpin bend to the right.

(13) Admire the castle ruins and go round them on the right. Then follow the path to the right, which leads back to the starting car park (S/E).

Notes

Car park at the water tower at the end of Kreuzbergstrasse, 77756 Hausach.
Kreuzbergstrasse is a fairly long, narrow street. At the end, there is a car park.

Here, there is a picnic area and also the start of a circular trail with play equipment for children, the Abenteuerweg.

Worth a visit

Worth seeing on the way to Wolfach and then Gutach is the Schwarzwälder Freilicht Museum, an open-air museum featuring a reconstruction of a Black Forest village from the 16th to 18th centuries.

Hausach is twinned with Arbois in the Jura.

Hausach is a very pretty town with a town centre that is a pleasure to visit. This little town deserves to be better known.

No worries, I'm used to hiking. It's a beautiful route, but you need to be well equipped because many people are wearing clothes that aren't suitable for hiking.

Hello, everyone!
If, when viewing the slideshow below, from the first to the last photo, you can sense our emotion, our admiration and our love for this delightful little walk that is the Wolfacher Grenzgänger-Steig in the Kinzig Valley in the Black Forest, which we have captured in pictures and words, then we may have succeeded in making you want to roll up your sleeves, rub your hands together and rejoice inwardly like Dr House, saying to yourself: "Let's see, I could possibly give it a try..."
Enjoy the rest of spring!

The first half was a very nice walk, with forests, meadows and beautiful views along forest paths; when you get to the chapel, the route is no longer signposted; all that's left is to take the tarmac road before trying to climb back up to the ridge! In the village, there's no signposting to get out of the housing estate!

The "5 red balls" marker was totally reliable, although there was a small doubt at point 12, as "the path opposite" was difficult to identify at this junction of forest paths.
Magnificent and varied scenery
