Start from the car park at the water tower at the end of Kreuzbergstrasse, 77756 Hausach.
The trail is marked with a pretty sign featuring five red dots. The signs say “Hausacher Bergsteig”.
(S/E) From the water tower at the car park, take the first path on the right which climbs into the forest. It follows the Abenteuerweg (adventure trail) with activities for children: walking along a cable, balancing on a fallen tree. At the first junction, take a detour along the path on the right to reach St Wendemius’ Chapel.
(1) A very beautiful chapel with a superb view of Hausach. Retrace your steps and continue along the path to the right. Cross the forest track and continue down into the valley. After a hairpin bend to the left, cross the meadow.
(2) Take the road on the right, cross the Hausachbach stream and, after 200m, turn onto the path on the left.
Walk along a meadow then through the forest.
(3) At the crossroads, turn left onto the Hansjakobusweg (St James’ Way).
(4) At the crossroads, continue left onto the Hansjakobusweg and left again at the next crossroads.
(5) At the junction, leave the Hansjakobusweg by turning left. Pass two paths on the right, then turn right. Further on, keep left and pass two paths on the right.
(6) Turn left at this junction in the middle of the meadow and enter the forest.
(7) At the hairpin bend, turn onto the path on the left. Head down into the forest. The path becomes tarmac. Shortly after the hairpin bend, leave the road and follow the path on the right which runs along the valley through the forest and then crosses a meadow.
(8) Cross the Hauserbachstrasse road and follow the small road opposite. Admire the beautiful Hauserbach Chapel.
After 300m, leave the road and follow the path to the left. At the next junction, take the hairpin bend to the left, then 400m further on, take the hairpin bend to the right. Cross the next path.
(9) Turn left at the Haseneckle junction (the ‘hare’s corner’). 200m further on, cross the path and continue through the forest.
(10) Turn right onto the forest road and immediately afterwards left, continuing along the contour line.
(11) At the crossroads, turn left then immediately right to follow a small path through the undergrowth that runs alongside the forest road. Cross the forest road at the hairpin bend and continue through the forest. You will reach the Schmids Wandereckle crossroads with an information sign (in German).
(12) Follow the path opposite. You’ll reach the forest road and follow it for 50m. Turn left and, 50m further on, take the hairpin bend to the right.
(13) Admire the castle ruins and go round them on the right. Then follow the path to the right, which leads back to the starting car park (S/E).
