Along the shores of Lake Geneva from Villeneuve to Montreux.

Departure from the Villeneuve landing stage. Several free car parks are available, but parking is limited to 4 hours (disc required):
- Near Villeneuve railway station, opposite the landing stage but slightly inside the town (paid parking also available, with parking meter).
- Along the lake road, a few hundred metres north of the landing stage (towards Montreux).

(S) From the Villeneuve landing stage, head north and follow the lake on your left along a tarmac path. Take a footbridge to cross a stream. Cross the Parc des Marines and go around the Villeneuve swimming pool on the right.

(1) Turn left and walk between a hedge on your left and the railway line on your right. Further on, you will reach the lake shore with the Château de Chillon in full view, dominated from above by the spectacular motorway bridge. Cross two streams in succession and enter the Domaine de Chillon. Pass the landing stage of the same name and reach the entrance to the Château de Chillon.

(2) Continue along the paved path that climbs back up towards the road. Shortly before reaching it, turn left onto a narrower path that descends towards the lake, in the direction of Territet and Montreux (sign). You will immediately come to a beach: you can either continue along the tarmac path or go down to the beach on the left, walk along the lake and then back up to the path at the end. Leave the Veytaux-Chillon railway station on your right.

(3) From the small Port du Clos de Chillon (vineyard on the right), you can admire the famous view of Chillon Castle and the Dents du Midi (see photo). Further on, cross a stream and take the Quai Ami Chessex.

(4) After the Territet landing stage, continue along Quai des Fleurs. Walk past the Montreux Casino and then the Eden Palace. At Place du Marché (large market hall), note the statue of Freddy Mercury on the lake side. Continue along the quay to the Montreux landing stage (E).

Simple trainers are sufficient for this easy walk, which takes place entirely on paved paths or lanes.

Public toilets are available near the landing stages and Chillon Castle. Drinks and snacks are available at the foot of Chillon Castle (2) and at Port du Clos de Chillon (3). Shops and bars/restaurants can be found in Villeneuve and Montreux. There is a market on Fridays in Montreux on the quay near the landing stage.

Organising your return journey:
- It is of course possible to return to Villeneuve on foot by following the same route as on the way there. The round trip on foot is 10.5 km and, as there is no incline, takes twice as long to walk, i.e. 3 hours in total.
- A pleasant option, recommended by the author, is to return by boat (25 minutes). Take the "Tour du Haut Lac" line in the Vevey-Saint-Gingolph direction. In spring 2016, there were 5 trips per day and the fare was 10 Swiss francs per person. For exact timetables, consult the Compagnie Générale de Navigation (CGN) website.

If you wish to combine this walk with a visit to Chillon Castle, note that this visit easily takes 1½ hours or more. Consequently, if you wish to respect the 4-hour parking limit in Villeneuve, this makes for a very tight schedule with the boat return option, but it is impossible with the walking return option.

This hike does not pose any problems in terms of finding your way, as you are always walking close to the lake. However, it does have some (albeit sparse) signposting, with two types of markings alternating:
- Silhouette of a hiker in the centre of a yellow arrow.
- The words "Tourisme pédestre" (hiking) written in a yellow diamond.
A detailed map does not weigh much (at least bring the one that accompanies this description).

Along the entire route, there are beautiful views of Lake Geneva, the peaks of the Chablais (Mémises, Borée, Oche, etc.) and the Dents du Midi.

Chillon Castle (13th century) (2),a fortifiedcastle built on a rock on the lake, is a major heritage site. It is open all year round, except on 25 December and 1 January. Opening hours (varying according to the season), prices and historical and cultural information can be found on the official website of Chillon Castle.

In Montreux:
- Grand residences and hotels, between (3) and (E).
- Quai des Fleurs, which lives up to its name, starting at (4).
- On the Quai at Place du Marché, the statue of Freddie Mercury (1946-1991), lead singer of Queen, who lived in Montreux for many years.
Since 1967, the town of Montreux has hosted a world-renowned jazz festival. In 1971, the fire at the casino during Frank Zappa's concert inspired the rock band Deep Purple for their hit "Smoke on the Water".
