Algunder Waalweg

A "Waalweg" in South Tyrol is a path that runs alongside a small irrigation canal. These irrigation canals, often well hidden, were created on the hillsides to water the vineyards, orchards and fields; they operate thanks to a sophisticated system of slopes and sluice gates where each farmer can use the water for their crops.
The Algund Waalweg is certainly the most iconic and offers a magnificent panorama of Algund, Meran and Dorf Tirol.

Description of the walk

Access to the start is from the Vinschgauer Staatsstrasse (SS38) at Töll. Do not take the Algund exit coming from Meran, but the next exit (SP52) shortly after the Brasserie Forst and the tunnels. A sign indicates the "Algunder Waalweg". About 500 m after the fork, there is a large car park on the left: parking costs €6. Please note that the car park fills up quickly, so arrive early in the morning.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the signs for "Algunder Waalweg". Very soon, follow a path alongside a small irrigation canal, which will accompany you for almost the entire hike. Walk along the hillside through the vineyards and enjoy the magnificent panorama.

(1) Passing a few houses, near the Avidea Hotel, join the Via Claudia Augusta, which now runs alongside our Waalweg. This road dates back to Roman times and connected the Venice region to Bavaria. 200 metres further on, pass the Leiter am Waal restaurant, where you can eat and get information. Continue along the same path alongside the irrigation canal and pass under the Algund Vellau cable car. A little further on, you will pass a few houses, including the Lausenbergerhof and Kaffee Konrad below.
At the Lausenbergerhof fork, stay on the Waalweg on the left and continue straight ahead until you reach a T-junction near the Grabbach stream.

(2) Go up on the left and then immediately turn right to cross the stream. Go down on the right and then turn left to continue on the Waalweg. Pass through vineyards and orchards along the path that winds along the mountain until you reach the suspension bridge over the Burgbach: admire the view.

(3) At this point, turn around and return along the same path to the car park where you started S/E).

Notes

(S/E) Algunder Waalweg car park: €6 charge. Car park fills up quickly.
This route is not difficult but the path is very busy, so it is best to set off in the morning.
Dining recommendation after the hike: the nearby Brasserie Forst with its magnificent and huge traditional beer garden. Traditional cuisine served all day.

(3) For the more adventurous, there is the option of continuing on to the village of Dorf Tirol and Schloss Tirol castle. Quite a steep climb.
