Tour of the Burkhard and Aglsbodenalm waterfalls

This is a must-do circuit in the Ridanna Valley. This beautiful hike follows the Burkhard torrent at the bottom of the Ridanna Valley, near the old mines, climbing up towards the glacial cirque. The waterfall trail is well maintained, with wooden walkways, bridges and superb views along the way. The circuit passes by the Aglsbodenalm inn, where you can stop for a bite to eat during the summer. A pleasant and varied loop with magnificent scenery.

Description of the walk

Car park at the old Val Ridanna mine. If the small car park in front of the mine is full, there is another, larger one on the other side of the river.

(S/E) From the car park after the bridge, cross the stream via the road and turn right in front of the mine. Continue to a second bridge.

(1) Just after the bridge, take the path on the right (red-white-red markings) towards Aglsbodenalm. The path, paved with large stones, climbs quite steeply at first and follows the stream at varying distances. It then becomes flatter and arrives at a bridge.

(2) Do not cross the bridge, stay on the same side of the stream and follow the path that branches off slightly to the left, still towards Aglsbodenalm (red-white-red markings). At the junction with a carriage road, continue straight ahead on the path for about 100 metres and rejoin the carriage road you just crossed. Follow this road for about 50 metres, then turn right onto the path that climbs uphill: there is an information panel about a local tale at this point. The climb is steady until you reach a concrete path.

(3) Turn right and follow the concrete path to the stone bridge marking the entrance to the glacial cirque.

(4) Cross the bridge, then immediately turn left onto the red-white-red marked trail towards Aglsalm and the Vedretta Refuge. Stay on this trail, which first runs alongside the stream, crosses a wet area over stones, then becomes a classic trail. The climb is quite steep until you reach a trail intersection.

(5) Take the path that descends to the left towards Aglsbodenalm. The descent is steep until you reach a metal footbridge (Fernerbach Brücke) that crosses the stream. Continue on to the inn.

(6) When you reach the inn, continue straight ahead on the almost flat carriage road towards the mine (Miniere) until you reach the bridge you crossed on the way there.

(4) Cross the bridge again, then turn right onto the path that descends. It is equipped with wooden footbridges and bridges and offers beautiful views of the torrent. Follow this path to the next road bridge you crossed on the way there.

(2) Leave this bridge on your right and continue straight ahead, ignoring two paths that branch off to the left further on.

(7) Before the path begins to wind in S-bends, take the path on the right. It cuts across the path below, then continues downhill towards the mine, where you will find the old buildings.

(8) Turn left onto the road to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The Aglsbodenalm inn is only open during the summer season.

It is possible not to complete the entire circuit around the glacial cirque: you can return directly to the hostel via the main path to avoid a fairly steep ascent and descent.

The circuit can be done in either direction, or modified according to your preferences (shorter loops are possible).
