Directions: Car park behind the multi-purpose hall in Albbruck (“Eichenweg” / “corner of Bergstraße”)
(S) From the car park, walk to Eichenweg and turn right, heading downhill past the multi-purpose hall until you reach “Schulstraße”, which you follow to the right. When you reach the Volksbank Hochrhein, you’ll come to a roundabout.
(1) Here, turn left onto “Albtalstraße”. Immediately after the roundabout, you’ll see a supermarket on the left-hand side. This is your chance to stock up on any supplies you may be short of.
Turn left into the supermarket car park, head towards the entrance and walk past the right-hand end of the building (between the building and “Albtalstraße”).
The narrow tarmac path takes you round the building and straight towards the footbridge, which takes you across “Albtalstraße” and the railway tracks to the other side. After crossing, turn right and walk parallel to “Bahnhofstraße” towards the Albsteig trailhead.
(2) Continue straight on along “Alte Landstraße”. You’ll cross the River Alb and come to a junction. Here, turn right onto “Schachener Straße”. After a few metres, cross the railway tracks again and carry on straight ahead. Once past the last houses, walk under a high-voltage power line.
There are a few more houses on the right-hand side; behind the last house, turn right onto a narrow, gravelly path (Albsteig signpost: a white diamond with a green border, a blue band in the centre resembling a heart, and the words “Albsteig” on the right).
Follow this path through the woods. After a while, you’ll reach the edge of the woods and then walk alongside meadows and farmland. At the first junction, keep to the right; do the same at the next one.
The path curves to the left; shortly after the end of the curve, turn right. You’ll then walk through the woods again for a short while.
Follow the path until you reach a T-junction; turn right here (“Albbrucker Straße”) and walk towards the village of Schachen.
(3) Just past the village sign, you’ll see a clearing with two benches – a good spot for a short break. Before reaching the rest area, continue to the right along a footpath. Here you’ll also see a signpost with the Albsteig route marker.
The footpath first takes you round Schachen, then rejoins a tarmac road (“Albsteg”), which you follow for a few metres before turning right again at the first opportunity. At the next T-junction, continue to the right towards the woods. The path now leads you down into the Alb Valley
(4) At the Studingersteg, cross the Alb and walk up the other side towards Hohenfels. You’ll come to ‘St. Blasier Straße’; turn left here and then straight away right again (‘Hohenfelsstraße’).
A few metres further on, the path turns left (Albsteig signpost). You’ll walk along the edge of the Alb Valley.
(5) You pass the Perterskanzel and come back down into the Alb valley via the L154.
(6) You cross the bridge and walk to the right along the L153 up to Tiefenstein. Shortly after the “Gasthaus zum Löwen”, you turn right again and leave the L153 country road.
The path first takes you along the edge of the forest, then curves through the woods and finally runs parallel to the River Alb, which flows below you on the right, continuing towards Göhrwihl. You follow the Albsteig signposts and come to a signpost for the “Kaibenfelsen”.
(7) It’s well worth taking a detour there; as well as the view, there’s also a rest area. Back on the Albsteig, carry on to the right and turn right again at the next junction.
At the next fork, keep left. The Albsteig signposts will guide you along the entire route. You’ll cross the Steimelbach and gradually walk down towards the Alb.
(8) At the confluence with the Höllbach, there’s a good spot to take a break at Albstrand and, depending on the weather, cool off in the Alb.
You cross the Höllbach and walk upstream through the Höllbach Gorge. After a while, you cross a bridge to the other side and reach the “Großer Höllbach Waterfall”.
(9) There, the Höllbach plunges a full 9 metres to the ground. A few metres further on, you’ll pass the “Kleiner Höllbach Wasserfall” (Small Höllbach Waterfall) and, a little way beyond that, you’ll leave the Albsteig for the day, turn left and follow the signpost to Göhrwihl. The path leads quite steeply out of the Höllbach valley. You’ll follow the “yellow diamond” markings towards Göhrwihl.
First you cross a wider path and shortly afterwards you come to another wider path; here, turn right. After a few metres, a narrow path turns off to the left again.
Follow this until you come to another wider path. Here, turn right. Now walk straight on until you reach a T-junction. There, turn left.
You can already see the church tower of Göhrwihl ahead of you. Now just carry on straight ahead until you reach the “Hauptstraße” in Göhrwihl, your destination for this stage (E).
