East of Puisseguin, starting from the Cave Coopérative

A fairly hilly route through vineyards, woods, hamlets and famous châteaux.
The few sections on the road (which are quiet) can be walked on the verges.

Description of the walk

Cave Coopérative car park at Durand, on the edge of the D17.

(S/E) Take the path at the far end of the car park on the north side, pass the sewage treatment tanks, turn left then right. Cross the road (D21), pass the Moulin de Roques, and follow the edge of the woods until you reach the road.

(1) Turn right, pass Fourvieille and, before Château Guibeau, take the road on the left which climbs via a right-hand bend followed by a left-hand bend.

(2) Leave the road and take the path on the right. Cross a road, then, when you reach the fork, follow another road to the left to enter the woods after 150 m.

(3) Leave the road and take the path on the right through the woods. At the exit, continue left along the path, then head right towards the hamlet of La Dognonne.

Moderator update 21/03/2019: the path through the woods no longer appears to exist. At (3), you can therefore continue along the road until you reach a path on the right, about 1.2 km further on, which leads to (4).

(4) Turn right onto the road and continue to the hamlet of Faure, which you go round on the right.

(5) At the T-junction, leave the road and turn left towards Noailles; continue along the path, skirting the woods. Turn right towards Château Tifayne, walk past it, then at the left-hand bend, turn right through the vineyards and turn left.

(6) Turn right along the vineyard to reach Château de Montabon.

(7) Turn left, walk past the wine cellars and then along the edge of the woods; turn right onto the road and then left at Jaumet, heading towards La Grave.

(8) At the T-junction, turn right and stay on the road that crosses the Ruisseau de Tuillac.

(9) At the crossroads, turn right towards Moulin de Bassat.

(10) After the Barbanne bridge, turn right at the crossroads towards Langlais.

(11) Turn right onto the road, then left onto the first track leading up towards Bayens.

(12) In the hamlet, head up to the left until you reach the D244, turn left then take the second right at Durand to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Important: this route takes you off the beaten track. All landmarks mentioned in the description (place names, castle names, as well as high-voltage power lines, bridges, etc.) are shown on the corresponding IGN 1:25,000 map but are not always included on the scaled-down map.

It is strongly recommended that you either obtain the map in question or use the app on a smartphone, which will also allow you to be geolocated at all times and thus track your movements accurately.

The route may cross or follow other marked trails. It is tempting to follow the markings! Unless otherwise specified, do not stray from the route.

Using walking poles can prove very useful and reassuring; as well as providing stability, they help distribute the strain.

same observation: it's difficult to find your way through the woods after arriving at a pigeon hunting hut.
otherwise, the hike is quite pleasant.

Hello, I much prefer the hike to the Château d'Aiguilhe east of Puisseguin, which is more enjoyable starting from the church in Puisseguin.

An enjoyable route 80% of the way, but a major problem between "La Tuilière" (Point 64) and "La Dognonne" (Point 57). The path was poorly maintained; we had to make our way through woods and thickets. Thanks to GPS (iPhone). A real thrill!

Hello, thankfully I’d kept the original version starting from the church square, which I’d created in 2018 – why on earth was it removed from the site???.. It was very well put together, though....... We didn’t come across a single hunter........ A lovely, varied and enjoyable walk

Hello,
I did this route a few days ago and, as you say, between points 3 and 4, you can’t access the path on the right as it’s closed (leading to a pidgeon hunting hut), so you have to stay on the road and walk a good kilometre before taking a path on the right to rejoin the original route.

Hello

This route poses a real problem at point 3. The path through the woods no longer exists. It is therefore impossible to cross the woods and emerge at point 4. We tried in vain to find a way out of the woods, but it proved completely impossible; we had to turn back and therefore abandon this hike. I therefore think it would be useful to amend this route or remove it altogether to prevent other hikers from having the same misadventure.

Many thanks to Bruno 33500 for this new, varied and hilly route, which I thoroughly enjoyed walking today. Please note, however: at point 3, the path to take on the right into the woods (which is also shown on my walking GPS) does not exist, or no longer does. There is indeed the entrance to a pidgeon hunting hut and, heading off to the left, a small path, but both come to an end very quickly. You can nevertheless make your way through the woods to reach point 4, but you’ll need a machete.
