On the D908 in the village of Logis Neuf, at a large roundabout, take Avenue Jean Moulin (school and fire station on the left) then follow signs for the shooting range. Park before the barrier on the Chemin de Mimet.
(S/E) Set off along the track to the left of Chemin de Mimet, heading towards a large water reservoir. After a right-hand bend, rejoin Chemin de Mimet and follow it to a wooded area and a signpost.
(1) Follow the signs for Pilon du Roi. The green-marked trail passes to the left of a large green gate. You will come to a Y-junction.
(2) Leave the green markings and head left. The path then slopes north-westwards and joins the Escombes valley.
(3) Turn right and head up the wild valley. Keep left at a Y-junction. The path then levels out through the undergrowth before joining a DFCI track.
(4) Cross the track to take the green-marked path opposite leading up the Pilon du Roi valley: take in the scenery. You’ll reach a Y-junction and a cairn.
(5) Keep to the left; the path on the right will be the one for the return journey. Continue up the valley, which becomes increasingly rugged. Pass a green-marked path on the left that leads to the Pas de la Colle. You’ll reach a Y-junction.
(6) Continue straight on, heading north. The path is marked green but was the main path some time ago, whilst the one on the right was marked. This path is more direct but the climb is steep and sometimes slippery. You’ll reach a signpost.
(7) Turn right and arrive at the foot of the Pilon du Roi. Continue along the path eastwards, then join a DFCI track to follow to the right, towards the Col Sainte-Anne. Arrive at the 593m mark.
(8) Turn right onto a stony path which joins a high-voltage pylon further down. Pass under the power line and follow the narrow path southwards through dense vegetation. You will reach a Y-junction.
(9) Turn right towards the south-west. The track is difficult to follow at first, but cairns subsequently mark the route to the bottom of the valley, which is sometimes overgrown with dense vegetation as it is rarely used: a pair of secateurs would be useful. The scenery is magnificent. Return to the main junction.
(5) Turn left into the Pilon du Roi valley.
(4) For a different return route, continue left along the DFCI track which joins the Chemin de Mimet. Then follow this path back to the starting point (S/E).
