The three chapels and the Rocher de Neuf-Heures in Digne-les-Bains
Two hills dominate the Bourg district of Digne-les-Bains. Here is a route that takes you to both in the same day. For those staying in Digne, it is nice to start directly from the town.
The Sentier des Pénitents des Mées
The upper trail offers a completely different view from the valley. The Pénitents show their heads and draperies, which is almost more surprising than from below! And then there is a lovely view of the nearby Durance valley. The trail is easy, but there is often a drop on at least one side. Take care with children.
Secondary summit of Cousson via Entrages
Although not very high, the Cousson dominates the region because it is an isolated peak. This gentle walk will take you to the original St-Michel Chapel on its perch, then to the southern summit with its stunning view.
This walk offers excellent value for money in terms of the view/difficulty of the climb! Ideal for families.
Allow 3 to 3½ hours for the walk, no more. There are no surprises.
The Greenways and parks of Champvert
This circular route offers maximum greenery and minimum tarmac in an almost 100% urban environment, right in the heart of Lyon. The three green sections are the parks of the 5th arrondissement town hall and La Passerelle, the Champvert Greenway and, finally, an unexpected path along the motorway, above the entrance to the Fourvière tunnel. The asphalt-free section accounts for around 80% of the total, which is rather nice in the middle of the city!
Around Mount Narcel
Parking: 4 spaces for cars a few metres from the start of the path. It's rare to find a quiet walk that barely touches tarmac in the Monts d'Or. This one does just that. You get to spend two hours in the forest near Lyon without any physical challenge. Ideal for families.
Sur la crête de la Montagne du Mollard
This hike is for those who:- want to walk 10 km at a good pace. It is a mostly flat trail, good for pacing.
- are afraid of the sun and heat. It is 90% covered by dense vegetation.
- enjoy peace and quiet. The area is much less frequented than the Baume mountain. This mountain is not named on maps. Here you will hike its entire length, along the north side and then along the ridge.
The Yzeron valley between Francheville and Craponne
Woods and river in the city! It's difficult to find an area entirely covered in trees that is both close to Lyon and large enough for several hours of walking. The paved sections are very limited; you mainly walk in a steep-sided valley, along the water's edge, namely the Yzeron stream, and under the constant canopy of trees. This makes it ideal during hot weather. The route is mostly flat, except for the loop on Findez hill. For those who dislike tarmac and don't want to go too far, this valley nestled between Craponne and Francheville is a good choice.
Around the Ravin des Ragots via Espinouse
This is a fairly easy walk, enjoyable for the whole family, and manageable even in wet weather.
On the left bank of the Bléone, the path climbs to offer views of the beautiful mountains to the north and east, such as the Pic d’Oise.
The hamlet of Espinouse, which overlooks the river, features its pebble-stone houses, typical of the region.
Memorial route in Le Vernet linked to the Germanwings 4U9525 tragedy
On 24 March 2015, 150 people lost their lives on the border between Vernet and Prads when a flight from Barcelona to Düsseldorf crashed. This memorial walk or pilgrimage will take you close to the site of the disaster, where you can pay your respects at the memorial that has been erected at the exact spot where the plane crashed.
In the shade of the Barre des Dourbes
Whilst admiring the splendid Barre des Dourbes, you’ll walk across varied terrain: tracks, paths, meadows, tunnels of greenery… The undulating landscape offers varied scenery and gives your legs a better workout than on flat ground. It’s therefore a half-day family walk, starting just 30 minutes from Digne. If you want to treat yourself or inspire others to climb the Barre, then this walk will have you salivating!
