The Sentier des Pénitents des Mées

The upper trail offers a completely different view from the valley. The Pénitents show their heads and draperies, which is almost more surprising than from below! And then there is a lovely view of the nearby Durance valley. The trail is easy, but there is often a drop on at least one side. Take care with children.

Description of the walk

We arrived via the D4, coming from the motorway or the Bléone valley. The start is from the car park at the rest area, located to the east of the village, where the flags are.

(S/E) Take the road that climbs to the right, facing the Pénitents.

(1) Continue along the road and enter the village, staying on the left-hand side, first on Rue du Rocher. Then cross to the other side of the cliff on Rue Saint-Roch: the "Sentier des Pénitents" is clearly signposted.

(2) Leave the street and take the path on the left that climbs to the top of the cliff. Leave the chapel on your right. There is no other path than the one at the top, except for two paths on the left that lead to dead-end viewpoints. So there is no risk of getting lost. The climb is a little steep at first.

(3) Turn left at the hairpin bend at the "Col des Pénitents" signpost to begin the descent. Follow the yellow arrow marked "L'ubac des Pénitents".
For a much longer hike of 2 to 3 hours, follow the San Peyre arrow. This is a loop that takes you back to Les Mées, continuing along the ridge overlooking the Ravin de la Combe. It is rated PR® on the IGN map.

(4) At the fork, a sign indicates that the direct descent to the left is not maintained. This is actually the old descent path.
If you want to take it, be prepared for a very steep descent with no safety barriers between two snow-covered rocks. It's a shortcut and saves half an hour.
If you prefer a less steep and better maintained path, the new path on the right goes to the eastern end of the massif before descending. This is the route shown on the map.

(5) Turn left at the bottom on the way back.

(1) At the road, take the hairpin bend to the right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The trail on the cliff, from (2) to (3), climbs continuously. It is a bit tiring for people who are not used to walking.

It is quite wide, often covered in puddingstone, which is the agglutinated pebbles that make up the Pénitents.
(see "Did you know?")

Quite quickly, there are cliffs, mainly on the left-hand side of the Pénitents, but also sometimes on the right, so you need to be careful with children. They must be able to recognise the danger and take it into account when walking.

The terrain is fairly well wooded, surrounded by typical regional scrubland. The trees provide shade from the sun.

Terrain type: half trail, half dirt road and asphalt.

Weather advice: beware of the wind if necessary, as you are at the top of cliffs. Check the weather forecast before you come. Not recommended in wet or windy weather.

Completed: 18 August 2021
Weather on the day: clear, a little windy.

Worth a visit

From (2) to (3) This is the most interesting part of the walk. You are actually behind the "heads" of the Penitents, or even on top of them!

You can see that they are more like "sails" than columns. These sails have unique or multiple curves. It's really amazing to see them like this, it's so different from what you see from below.

The bird's-eye view is exceptional, and in some places you can see an arch or holes. Sometimes you can see all the way down, which is a bit dizzying.

What's more, between the Pénitents, you can see the Durance valley. The effect is guaranteed.

(4) The new path has a beautiful history, as it was built entirely by one man, a municipal employee from Les Mées who wanted to provide this service to visitors. Jean Millet worked on this project for several years. He was given thousands of concrete reinforcing bars to hold the wooden steps that you will walk on. What an amazing job!

You'll remember this unique walk.

Did you know?

1. You will be hiking on the north cliff, which contains 95% of the Pénitents. On 2 December 2019, a Pénitent on the south cliff collapsed, destroying three houses but killing no one. Perhaps its penance was over? In any case, it was more of a scare than anything else.

2. The Penitents' puddingstone is a consolidated sedimentary rock made up of rounded debris, which are ancient pebbles that have been transported some distance in rivers or along a coastline.
Looking closely at the rock of the Penitents, you can clearly see the pebbles, which proves that the water was once at a higher level than the Penitents.

A picturesque trail through the Pénitents des Mées.
A lovely walk starting from the village, best enjoyed in fine weather.
The descent is long but made easier by steps....

A beautiful, spectacular hike that’s well signposted, but which requires strong calves, healthy knees and sure-footedness, due to the slopes, high steps and exposed sections.
The start is a good kilometre from the village centre... and there are no more flags!
On a very sunny afternoon, it might be worth doing the route in the opposite direction: the climb is no less steep, but it’s much more shaded than going the ‘normal’ way...

A lovely hike, best avoided in wet weather. The route climbs up the side of the cliffs, so you’ll need a head for heights, but the views are magnificent, offering both panoramic scenery and a bird’s-eye view of the ‘penitents’. It’s a fairly straightforward route, signposted with signs indicating the direction.

Short circular, parish specific to Brittany, very pleasant, be careful on sections with steep drops on either side. Bring water in summer.

Beautiful view, few people. It climbs a lot at the beginning and descends nicely on the way back. Beautiful view between the village, mountains and forest. Beautiful route with several panoramic views

If you're talking about the starting point, I realise that it's not actually that clear. It's been corrected, thank you.

Hike with magnificent views, but be warned: you need to be in good shape and, above all, not afraid of heights. For me, some sections were dangerous. We walked as a family with an 11-year-old boy and were happy but relieved when we finished

A very beautiful hike.
The secure climb after St. Roch's Chapel is well worth the effort...
The views of the penitents and the plain are very pretty.
I fell in love with the arch...
We are grateful to Mr. Jean Millet, to whom we owe the well-marked descent through the forest.
Now seniors, we did this hike years ago in the opposite direction, and the climb between the rocks was not easy.
These penitents are as imposing from below as they are from above.
Thank you to the author for sharing.

Pleasant hike not recommended for people who suffer from vertigo or young children
Not recommended if it has rained the day before, as the logs will be slippery

Reliable description, beautiful views. However, caution is advised for those prone to vertigo.
In my opinion, suitable for teenagers but definitely not for children.

Superb hike with numerous views of Les Mees and the valley. We did this hike during the week in the morning, and it took 2.5 hours for average walkers. The route is quite technical with a secure climb at the start and some vertiginous sections that require great caution. Log steps make the descent easier. Best done in dry weather. The "moderate" rating is well deserved.
But what a treat. Thank you for sharing.
