Car park: 4 parking spaces a few metres from the start of the path.
The start is at the beginning of the Chemin du Narcel, which is a well-marked path with its name on a wooden plaque.
(S/E) Follow the Chemin du Narcel uphill between the houses.
(1) Turn left at the signpost marked "Le Renard", signposted Poleymieux.
(2) On the right is a drystone shelter, typical of the Monts d'Or, used by shepherds for shelter. Continue straight on until you reach the Mont Verdun road.
(3) Cross the road to take a short path between two low posts that leads to a small road. Turn left. A little further to the right, a beam marks the entrance to a path leading downhill. Take this path, which soon turns left and heads north-east.
(4) Skirting the field, you come to a meadow on the right where you can sometimes see a path leading uphill. However, you may only see an unmown meadow with no paths at all. You'll need to use the map or GPS to be sure- there's no choice. The path is visible on the IGN map and also on Openstreetmap Rando. So you need to turn right and climb for 50 m. Then turn left when you reach a small wood, and you'll find a dirt path with a steep slope.
At the top of this hill, which is the steepest on the whole route, the path crosses a wall that leads to a better-marked path, and you turn right. When you reach the Mont Verdun road, walk along this road to the left for 200 m and then, at the hairpin bend, turn right onto the small road.
(5) You have the choice of either going quietly straight ahead along the narrow road that joins the return path (this is a shortcut) or taking the almost invisible path on the right just after the "Terrain militaire" sign. This is the choice of route.
This path is literally overgrown with scrub and brambles, up to the shoulders. You can't get past it without your clothes being snagged by brambles, so you'll need clothes that cover all your legs and upper body. Avoid this type of distraction if you don't want it, although it is a very short one. The path leads past military installations and descends to the left to a crossroads just before a chapel.
(7) Turn left, leaving the chapel further on your right, and follow the path straight downhill.
(1) Go straight on to find the parking area at the end of Chemin de Narcel(S/E).
We were able to do it by public transport from Lyon on the 22 bus that leaves from Gare de Vaise. As I don't have a car, it's great to be able to go for a walk in the countryside. My previous walks around Lyon were much less wooded, with more residential areas and tarmac roads to cross than this one. The undergrowth section towards the military field was more accessible than indicated in the description because the brambles had been flattened out on the ground, creating a sort of clearing.
