Japanese Lake Rivington Gardens

Description

Start : The Great House Barn car park. (BL6 7SB) Grid ref. SD 628 138

(S/E) Follow path from the Great House Barn cafe by Go Ape reception down towards the lake. Upon reaching the fence turn left (South) following the path as it curves around Lower Rivington reservoir. Continue South along path parallel to reservoir.

(1) Continue South (right fork) at the junction. After wandering around 'Liverpool Castle' (folly) take the path South-East-East heading away from its entrance. Walk straight for around 650m then turn left (North) along a path beside the road (Rivington Lane).

(2) When you join Rivington Lane, carefully cross it to pick up the path on the other side which heads North-East-East. At the next junction, turn right (South-East) to briefly follow a well-marked path. Then, turn sharp left (North) along Roynton Road, a track heading up the slope. Some good views South over the reservoirs. Walk in the same direction around 750m then pass through a gate.

(3) Turn right (North-East) to ascend the slope and walk on the left side of Japanese Lake. Follow path Noth beside the lake.
Possible detour hers North-East to Italian Lake and the top of the ridge with views to Lake District and coast on a clear day !!!
Otherwise, pass under an ornamental arch and turn immediately right (North) along a substantial path.

(4) Pass under Levers Bridge and to continue North. Another chance here to detour right (East) for views over the Lancashire plain. Leave the substantial track to take a path left (West-North-West) down the slope.

Pass through gate and turn briefly right (North) to cross to the North side of Half Brook. At the next junction, turn left (South-West) following the path beside Half Brook for around 400m. Then follow the path on the North side of Rivington Barn through the picnic area. ''Toilets and refreshments available here at weekends.''

(5) Carefully follow the road South-West away from the barn area. Upon reaching Rivington Lane turn right (North-West). Take care, there is no footpath beside the road. Immediately past the school grounds turn left (South) to the end of the car park.

(6) At the road junction turn left (South-West) along Horrobin Lane using a path left past the school.

(7) At end of the car park take the path right down (Southerly) towards the water and then beside the lake (Lower Rivington Reservoir). After around 500m, turn left (North-East) along the path past 'Go Ape' and back to the cafe area. (S/E)

Information Centre and cafe to relax and enjoy.
