Start: Red House Bridge, Adlington (PR7 4HX) Grid ref. SD 599 125 At the end of Harrison Road.
(S/E) Take the path on the North West side of Red House Bridge down to the towpath. Follow the towpath right (South) under Aberdeen Bridge, past Wigan Golf Course to Blundell Lane.
(1) After 2.3 Km, leave the towpath and briefly take Blundell Lane right (West) before taking the path right (North) around Wigan Golf Club club house.
(2) Leave the golf club track to enter Arley Wood via a clearly marked path.
(3) Cross the bridge onto the North side of River Douglas to follow the path up the slope as it bends left (West)and goes along lakes. Follow the path above the North Side of Worthington lakes.
(4) At the marker post turn sharply left (West) to pass between 2 lakes onto a farm track.
(5) Carefully cross Chorley Road (A5106) to briefly follow the grass verge of Platt Lane for 300 m.
(6) Use steps in the wall right, beside the main gate to enter Wrenall Estate. According to the OS map the footpath follows a paved road, however, signage directs walkers around the North-East boundary to clearly signposted steps beside the pen and turn left (North-West).
(7) You then reach a junction. Many well-defined paths in this section are to avoid. The footpath is to be found in the North-West corner of the paddock (seems 30m further North than OS indicated) It initially follows the field boundary left (South-West) then onto a farm track up to the railway bridge.
(8) Cross the railway bridge to follow a well defined farm track avoiding turn offs to Gorse Hall and Talbot Farm.
(9) The track seems to come to a dead end but the footpath can be located in the left (North-West) corner between trees. Follow it North across the valley floor before ascending Coppull Hill. Enjoy the views East to Winter Hill. Enter Hic Bibi Nature Reserve and continue North.
(10) Take the path right (East) along the North side of Hic Bibi Reserve, over the rail bridge and across farmland. Part of the official path passes between a pair of fences and is badly overgrown so follow an unofficial path parallel to it. The tunnel in the hedge leads to a stile.
(11) After the stile take the track left (North) then a stile beside the oak tree to a footpath across the corner of the field.
(12) Turn briefly right (East) along Jolly Tar Lame. Take care as there is no footpath and the lane has it bends.
(13) Briefly turn left (North-East) along Coppull Hall Lane to take the footpath right (North-East) through woodland. The path runs parallel to the North side of the field.
(14) Carefully cross Wigan Road (A5106) to the site entrance of the sand pit. Take the Northern track and follow it as it bends South-East around the quarry and onto Sandy Lane.
(15) Follow Park Road left (East) until reaching the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Take steps on the South side, right of the bridge down to the towpath and follow it right (South). Leave the towpath at Red House Bridge. (S/E)
