Start: Water House Nook (BL6 5LJ) Grid ref. SD 6011 126 Adlington South Business Village along A6 Chorley Road. Recommended parking is approximately 200m South (left) along Chorley Rd.
(S/E) From Chorley Road, take steps down to briefly follow the North bank of River Douglas. Cross the footbridge on the left to ascend the slope up to the disused railway line and follow it South-South-West for 3 Km or so.
(1) Just before the bridge over the track, take the steps left on the North side up to the canal and follow it briefly South before joining the path around Canal Row cottages. Having past in front of the last cottage take the stile (left) into the field and follow the hedgerow as it turns South passing between cottages.
(2) Carefully cross Red Rock Road to take the footpath immediately opposite heading towards a wooded area. Cross the stile to follow the path on the East Side of Baulk House enclosure. Ascend the clearly signposted track left (East). Some very good 270 views over Winter Hill, Beacon and Billinge hills.
(3) Turn South (right) to carefully follow School Lane which does not have a footpath. Upon reaching Pendlebury Lane turn East (left) to follow the footpath which runs between the front of a house and around the stable.
(4) Cross stile to follow path North (left) beside hedgerow. Carefully cross Meadow Pit Lane and briefly head East (right).
(5) Leave the lane by taking the footpath North (left) into the field and along the hedgerow. Approximately 50m before Northern field boundary turn North-West (left) along the route of the old farm track towards Patchcroft Farm. The track can be difficult to see if the grass is long. Upon reaching the farm, take stone steps over a wall onto the farm track and walk until you reach a lane.
(6) Turn North-East (right) along Pennington Lane. Continue along the lane as it bends East (right) towards farm buildings.
(7) At the end of the lane take the footpath North (left) between dog kennels and stables then continue beside the hedgerow before passing in front of Hollins Head. Briefly follow Blundell Lane as it turns East (right).
(8) Take the footpath North (left) at the red postbox as it passes beside the house and then beside the hedgerow. At the North end of the field, the footpath turns North-West (left) beside the hedge.
(9) OS footpath apparently passes 50m North and parallel to substantial concrete track but proved difficult to find due to crop in the field so I followed the concrete path East (right) to the main road. Turn North-West (left) to briefly follow Chorley Road.
(10) Opposite Crows Nest farm carefully cross Chorley Road onto the footpath as it crosses the field and heads North-East beside the hedge. Continue on the path as it bends North (left) beside a small pond.
(11) Take Pincroft Road East (left) as it passes between railway arches and a fishing lake. At the junction turn South-West (left) along Huyton Road to reach A6 road where you turn left to walk back to the start. (S/E)
