Description of the walk

Start: Knowle House Car Park, Rivington Lane, Bolton BL6 7RT

(S/E) Turn left just by the car park to find the footpath going to Liverpool Castle. Continue on this path until reaching Liverpool Castle.

(1) At the Castle turn right (North) to follow the shore of Rivington Reservoir. Continue on the footpath closer to the reservoir until seeing a footpath on your right (North-East) going on the side of Go Ape (1 Km). Turn right and continue until the road.

(2) Turn left (North) to walk on the road. Continue along the road until reaching a car park on your right hand side. Turn right (second footpath) and continue straight (East) until reaching another car park and a pub.

(3) At the pub, take the footpath straight ahead (East) that follows Hall Brook. Continue until seeing another path in front of you. Turn left then directly right (North-East) and continue straight until reaching a road.

(4) At the road turn right to take the large path (leaving Roynton road). Continue on this large path "Georges lane" until seeing a footpath on your left going to Rivington Pike.

(5) Turn left and walk to Rivington Pike. Then continue straight until reaching a road. Cross the road and continue straight (South) until reaching a road. Keep walking on the road until reaching Rivington Lane. Turn right to find the car park. (S/E)

Enjoyed this varied and interesting walk with a magnificent view from the top of Rivington Pike. Also deviated a bit to see the terraced gardens of the old Lever house.
Just one issue; free parking (another plus) is opposite Cumberland school. There is also lots of roadside parking. Directions for start of walk were confusing though, sending us right on Rivington lane when the walk to Liverpool castle is on a track which is left of the car park. Managed to work it out and it didn't spoil a lovely day out.

The route then ascends over farmland to Hic Bibi Nature Reserve on the top of Coppull Hill giving extensive views over Winter Hall. The final section of the walk descends back to the canal.
