This hike takes us on a very airy route along the facilities created in 1954 by the SNCF in the middle of the mountains to collect part of the water from the underground river in the massif and part of the water from the Artouste power station, and to channel it through a penstock to the Miégebat power station on the Gave d'Ossau. After the Grottes des Eaux-Chaudes caves, the route follows the Artouste-Miégebat underground water supply canal with its many windows.

Day two: return to Astún from the Pombie Refuge, via the Col and the Peyreget hut, then Lake Castérau and the Col des Moines. Compared to the first day, the elevation gains are a little steeper, with the final ascent covering nearly 520 m. The atmosphere is different: no ridges, but lakes and valleys!

The Way of St James (Voie d’Arles – GR® 653) offers a lovely, easy and shaded route through the Aspe Valley, winding between gorges and sun-drenched valleys. We do not suggest it as a circular route here, as the train (TER line 55) allows you to return easily to your starting point.The route is suitable for all seasons; however, avoid wet periods!
Warning (2025): following the severe flooding in the Aspe Valley in September 2024, some sections of the path may be damaged. Check before setting off.
