Vineyards and spirituality in Gueberschwihr

Notre-Dame du Schauenberg clings to the mountainside and is a striking feature of the landscape.
The highlight of this route is the splendid view over the Alsace plain, the Kaiserstuhl and the Black Forest from the orientation point.
Walkers will also discover the Chapel of Saint Leonard, the Teufelstein (Devil’s Stone), the Stations of the Cross in Pfaffenheim and Gueberschwihr, and can also reach the Druids’ Table, which overlooks Notre-Dame du Schauenberg.
Please note that the first part of the walk, up to Schauenberg, is quite steep and is not suitable for those unaccustomed to walking.

Description of the walk

Parking is available at the town hall car park in the centre of Gueberschwihr.

Follow the “Vignoble et Spiritualité” signs throughout the route.

(S/E) From the Town Hall square, take Rue Haute, Rue Saint-Marc and Rue du Schauenberg to a junction at the village exit.

(1) Turn left and follow the “Vignoble et spiritualité” arrow. The path follows the Gueberschwihr Way of the Cross. At the top of the path, follow the tarmac road for a few metres. Before heading to the Schauenberg pilgrimage site, you can explore the Druids’ Table via a relatively steep but short path (10 mins). Return along the same route to discover Notre-Dame de Schauenberg and its splendid view.

(2) After exploring the pilgrimage site and the church, walk past the open-air altar and then head down the path which follows the Way of the Cross at Pfaffenheim.

(3) Turn left, then, a little further down, cross the road and turn left to reach the Chapel of Saint-Léonard and the ruins of an old village.

(4) Walk past the chapel and turn right onto the small path towards Pfaffenheim. This path leads out of the forest and through the vineyard.

(5) Go straight on (to the left of the reservoir) then turn right towards the centre of the village of Pfaffenheim.

(6) At the fountain, take the street on the left, continue straight ahead, then turn left (Rue du Muscat). Follow the path marked “Vignoble et spiritualité”. At the first junction, after leaving Pfaffenheim, take the path on the left called “Rouffachweg”. At the very end, turn left towards the Osperling Fountain.

(7) Turn right towards the centre of Gueberschwihr and continue straight on through its medieval streets.

(8) Walk past the monumental Fountain of the Virgin Mary and you will come out onto the Town Hall square (S/E).

The route is signposted from start to finish, but the signage is sometimes confusing (both directions are indicated) or even incomplete (particularly in Pfaffenheim). I therefore recommend keeping a map or GPS to hand. There is a grocery shop at the starting point on the town hall square (closed from 12.30 pm to 4.30 pm).
