Head to the Schauenberg car park above Pfaffenheim.
(S/E) From the car park, take the path heading due north and uphill, marked with a Red Ring and signposted for the Kukuckstein Circular Walk. After a 20-minute climb over uneven terrain, amongst sandstone rocks and with views across the Alsace plain, you’ll reach the Rocher du Coucou (Kukuckstein). At the foot of the rock lies the village of Gueberschwihr.
(1) Ignore the path dropping off to the right and walk past a bench. 20 metres further on, at a Fork in the road, ignore the path veering off to the right (marked with a Red Diamond) and turn left, climbing slightly, until you reach a wide, relatively flat track after about 50 metres. Take this track to the right. At the bottom of a short descent, you’ll reach a junction with a wide path leading off to the right. Take the path on the left and walk uphill for about 50 metres before reaching another junction.
(2) Leave the wide path and take the path branching off to the right, marked with a Blue Diamond. Cross a track, then, 10 metres further on, a path marked with a Red Cross.
(3) Continue straight ahead, still on the Blue Diamond path, towards Heiliger Baum. Cross another wide forest track before reaching a junction at Heiliger Baum five minutes later.
(4) At a red barrier, turn off (south-south-east) onto the path marked with a Red Triangle, heading towards Rouffach.
(5) At the next junction, turn left, due east, onto the path marked with a Blue Cross, heading towards Schauenberg. At a barrier, you’ll come to a wide path; take this on the right. 150 metres further on, at the bottom of a gentle descent, turn left to join a wide path still marked with a Blue Cross. Stay on this downhill path, ignoring the paths coming from the left. Pass to the left of a small clearing and arrive at a junction with a path marked with a Red Cross.
(6) Don’t miss this. Leave the main path heading downhill and turn right onto the Red Cross-marked path towards Schauenberg. 15 minutes later, after passing above the car park, you’ll reach a junction.
(7) Follow the Red Cross path which, a few metres further on, joins the wide path leading to Notre-Dame du Schauenberg.
(8) Enjoy the panoramic view from the terrace and perhaps take a look around.
Return to the previous junction.
(7) Continue straight on for 200 m, staying on the wide path lined with wooden statues, until you reach (S/E).
