Towards the ponds of the Saint-Blaise Leisure Park

A lovely, very pleasant walk that goes round the Saint-Blaise ponds and tells the story of the miners’ lives.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the football ground in Brèges.

(S/E) Head towards the road leading to Bois Deux; at the second bend in the road before the village of Bois Deux, take the small path on the right leading towards the headframe (former iron mines).

(1) Take the path on the right and go round the headframe; these are the old Bois II and III iron mines.
Continue straight along the path towards the logistics buildings.

(2) Take the tarmac road on the right and continue to the junction at the Augerie barracks.

(3) Turn right towards the old Bois iron mine shaft. Head towards Cité du Bois I.

(4) Take the road on the left leading to the sewage treatment plant. Walk past it and turn left (at the red and white barrier) onto the path leading up to the ruins of Château des Forges; there are several bends before you reach the castle ruins.
Go straight down the stairs leading to the ponds. Walk alongside them to reach Saint-Blaise beach.

(5) Continue straight on along the path that runs alongside the ponds. At the junction, take the D219 to the right and head towards Misengrain.

(6) Turn right onto the road leading to La Gâtelière, then past the houses of La Camusaie, and on to La Prévoté, where there is a farm.

(7) Opposite the farm, take the path on the right and continue straight on. Head down to the ponds of the Parc aux Truites. Cross between the two ponds and turn left towards the gate, then continue to the junction at La Cité du Bois.

(8) Turn onto the path on the left which runs alongside the Étangs de la Corbinière. Continue to the end of the last pond. Cross the small road.

(9) Take the path on the right. Follow the Ruisseau de Misengrain, a very pleasant stretch. Reach La Baudraie.

(10) Continue right along the track and turn left at the next bend. Enter the forest to begin a short descent leading to the Étang de la Brondairie. Go round it on the left, pass in front of the houses and take the road leading towards the Cité de Brèges.
At the end of this small road, join the main Nyoiseau-Segré road (D71), walk up the pavement alongside the football pitch to reach the car park (S/E).

During the high season or at weekends, it’s bound to be busy around the lake and the beach. A bit too much tarmac for my liking, but it’s hard to avoid it. Thanks for the suggestion.

As with many routes, it’s always quite difficult to work out which way to go at the starting point...
However, as a trail marker and former president of a hiking association, I have to say the signposting is very poorly done.
The markings do not comply with the standard (the lines have clearly been painted with a huge brush and are several centimetres wide). This signposting is a mess and I cannot understand why the local council would accept this sort of work.

A very pleasant walk, though you might need to be careful in damp weather, depending on how sure-footed you are. Make sure you wear suitable footwear and bring walking poles, as some sections can be slippery due to the leaves on the forest floor. There are some magical spots around the ponds, with brief explanations of how slate was quarried. The castle ruins have also been beautifully restored. I plan to do it again in the summer, when the scenery should look quite different.
