Description of the walk

Park at the Lac d’Aubert car park.

(S) Before heading towards the Col de Madamète, take a moment to explore the shores of Lac d'Aubert (orientation table, dam, etc.).
Return to the car park entrance to find a path heading north towards the Col de Madamète and continue for about 400m.

(1) Turn right towards Lac d'Aumar.
Once you reach the lake’s shore, follow the path running alongside it towards the south-east.

(2) Cross a small ford, continue keeping the lake on your left until you rejoin the road leading to the car park.
Shortly before this, you will see a building on your right; you can make a detour there to find some raspberries if you are hiking in September.
Continue along the path between the road and the lake until you reach the far end of the lake.

(3) Once there, join the path climbing towards the Col d’Aumar and cross it. Lac de l’Île, the destination of this walk, lies slightly to the right behind a hill.
Head back down towards the north for about 600m.

(4) Shortly after a “pool” of stones (see photos), take a path branching off to the right.
The paths leading to the lake are not very well marked and may change from year to year depending on foot traffic.

(5) After 500m, having crossed a ford, you will arrive at a tiny hillock at the southern end of the lake, offering a fine view.
Cross the ford again and walk up along the western shore of the lake for 200m.

(6) Then take a path back towards the Col d'Aumar.
Pass between the hill and the lake to return to the main path.
As on the way there, the path is faint. It is therefore easy to lose your way; the key is to stay on course

(7) Once back on the main path, follow it in the opposite direction to the ford you crossed on the way to Lac d'Aumar.

(2) Just before the ford, turn off towards the car park (S/E).

Regulations concerning the Néouvielle National Nature Reserve:

• Please keep quiet to preserve the peace and tranquillity of the area
• Please bring bin bags with you to carry your rubbish back down
• No picking or collecting of plants, minerals or fossils is permitted
• Capturing animals is prohibited
• Controlled camping is permitted more than an hour’s walk from a road access point, between 7pm and 9am
• No camping or overnight parking of motorhomes to preserve the beauty of the sites and prevent pollution
• Hunting and fishing are prohibited

Vehicle access to Lac d'Aubert is only permitted at certain times (before 10.00 am, I believe; but it is best to check in advance). Please note that there is a charge for access to the lakes and the Oredon car park.
After 10.00 am, you must park at Lac d’Orédon and take the shuttle bus.

At Orédon and on the climb to Aubert-Aumar, access to Lac d'Aubert by road from Orédon is restricted between 1 July and 15 September. From 9.30 am to 6.30 pm, vehicles are prohibited from driving up the hill. Parking is compulsory at Orédon (Néouvielle Nature Reserve visitor centre). During these times, a shuttle bus (€4 return in 2005) can take you to the lake. It is worth parking at Lac d’Orédon and taking the Laquettes trail. Before 9.30 am and after 6.30 pm, traffic is permitted and free of charge. Parking is subject to a charge. After 8 hours, the charge is €5. If you return during toll hours, you will also pay €5 (2005 rate) –

This charge would be €8 in 2014

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

As this is a short hike, it can of course be extended according to the hiker’s wishes.
It is also possible to start from Lac d'Orédon to undertake this walk.

An easy and very scenic walk, enjoyed with the family.
The area around Lake Aumar is magnificent.
We got a bit “lost” after the Col d’Aumar, though “lost” is perhaps a bit of an exaggeration as the lake is visible from the pass, and vice versa.
On the way back, we didn’t follow the route; we walked back along the other side of the lake, which was lovely too!

Note: The road leading up from Lake Orédon to Lake Aubert (D177) is closed (at least in summer) from 9.30 am (according to the sign at the bottom of the road). However, the return journey appears to be possible at any time.

Be aware of the timings for arriving at the Oredon car park (a mandatory flat-rate charge of €9 applies). After 10.30 am, you can no longer drive your own car up to Lake Aubert...except by a paid shuttle bus (€4.50 per person aged 10 and over), which only accepts payment by cheque or cash (no credit cards). This means you’ll have to allow at least an extra hour and a half for the climb if you haven’t brought all your payment methods with you.

On the way there, no problems up to the Col d'Aumar (absolutely stunning!!!)
At the pass, the main path heads left towards the upper Estibère lake, but there is no clear start to the path leading to the Île lake, which you can still see and reach via easy tracks
So, at the pass, we recommend taking the paths slightly to the right and heading straight down to the lake; it’s not very steep and very easy.
The final section (return from Aumar to the Col d’Estoudou via the GR10 – Orédon) is rather uninteresting, with lots of ups and downs; due to a lack of signposting and precise directions on the map, we took the well-marked shortcut to the right at Lac d’Orédon – not recommended for children or in wet weather.
Despite the end of the route, there are fabulous views of the Néouvielle, all the peaks of the massif and the lakes.

Well worth doing again!
