The Hourquette d'Aubert via Lac d'Aubert and Lac d'Aumar

The Hourquette d’Aubert is a mule track pass linking the Aure Valley to the Barèges Valley.
Ideally situated, this pass offers a magnificent view of the most beautiful lakes of Néouvielle and the peaks surrounding them.
As you climb the Dets Coubous ridge to the cairns at 2,569 m, the mountain horizon widens to offer a more complete and truly beautiful panorama.

Description of the walk

Access to the Orédon and Aubert car parks is subject to a charge regardless of arrival time between mid-June and mid-September, with variations of 2 to 3 days depending on the year. See practical information.

(S/E) From the car park, head to Lac d’Aubert.
Walk along its right-hand side following the wooden railing, then take the path towards the Hourquette d’Aubert, Lac d’Aumar and the Col de Madamète until you reach a junction of marked trails (signs at the centre of the junction).

(1) At the signposts, ignore the path to the Hourquette d’Aubert on the left and take the path to Lac d’Aumar on the right.
After a few metres, the path leads straight to the lake.

(2) At the sign for the lake, turn left onto the GR®10, heading towards the Col de Madamète.
The GR® runs along the right-hand bank of the lake until it reaches a large menhir-like rock.

(3) Walk past the rock and, behind it, immediately turn 90° left onto the path linking theGR®10to the Hourquette path (this path does not appear on the IGN map but is shown on OpenStreetMap). Follow this path uphill until you reach the Hourquette d’Aubert path.

(4) Turn right onto the Hourquette path and head for the Hourquette or Col d'Aubert.

(5) Turn right and head north-east up the Dets-Coubous ridge path until you reach a small hillock marked by two large cairns.

(6) Follow the same route back as on the way there to the Lac d'Aubert car park (S/E).

During these dates, driving up to Lac d'Aubert is only permitted before 9.30 am or after 6 pm.
However, you may drive down at any time.

Between 9.30 am and 6 pm, shuttle buses run every half hour in both directions between Lac d’Orédon and Lac d’Aubert.

The hike from the Aubert car park is of moderate difficulty up to the pass. The climb towards the two large cairns is a little steeper and is of upper moderate difficulty. The well-marked path climbs in short zigzags and allows you to reach the two large cairns quickly.
Finally, this hike should only be undertaken during the summer months. The road usually closes at the end of October and sometimes earlier.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

Route from the Lac d'Orédon car park.

At the northern end of the car park, take the Laquettes path towards Lac d’Aubert. This very well-marked path climbs through the forest, then runs alongside the Laquettes before emerging below the Lac d’Aubert dam.
From there, take the path to the right of the dam and follow it along the northern shore of Lac d’Aubert.
Head right towards the orientation table and then the lake car park. Follow the route marked on the map.

In this case, the route covers a distance of 13 km with an elevation gain of 712 m and takes around 7 hours. The hike starting from Lac d’Orédon is of medium-high difficulty.

A beautiful hike with superb views of the Aubert, Aumar and Laquettes lakes.
From La Hourquette, it would be a shame not to make the short and easy climb to the promontory described, which offers views of the Pic du Midi... when there are no clouds.

A superb hike that combines lakeside and mountain scenery. Highly recommended. Not too busy, even though it was October. Bonus: free parking at this time of year. Set off early so you can complete the whole route.

The scenery was beautiful that day, despite the mist (caused by sand blown in by the southerly wind!).
When we reached the pass, the wind was even stronger, so we decided not to continue along the ridge.
