Crêt de l'Œillon from Saint-Sabin

This route, consisting of three circular loops, is one of the most beautiful hikes in Pilat.
You will discover the Chapelle Saint-Sabin, a viewpoint over the Rhône valley, the Pic des Trois Dents and the Crêt de l'Œillon, dominated by its television transmitter.

Description of the walk

Access to the hamlet of Saint-Sabin:
- From the Rhône valley, via Pélussin, take the Col de l'Oeillon towards Le Bessat for 1 km, then turn left onto a small road that leads to the hamlet of St-Sabin.
- Or from St-Étienne or St-Chamond, via the Croix de Chaubouret towards Pélussin for 10 km, then turn right onto a small road that leads to the hamlet of St-Sabin.
Park in the shaded car park near the Croix de Saint-Sabin.

(S/E) Head east on the track towards the Chapel of St-Sabin. After 100 m, turn right onto the path that climbs towards the chapel. From the chapel, take the path that follows the ridge line southwards for 800 m.
You will reach a fork (elevation 1075).

(1) Take the forest track on the right, which will take you back to the car park where thefirst circular ends.

(S/E) Follow the road towards the Croix de Saint-Sabin. At the crossroads by the cross, take the stony track opposite which climbs towards the Col du Gratteau. Before reaching the Rocher de Chauchibat, you will come to another crossroads.

(2) Leave the very stony track on the left and take the gentler one on the right that climbs up to the Col du Gratteau. Reach this pass.

(3) Walk along the car park via the wooden platform to take the metal stairs that lead down to the Pic des Trois Dents trail. The trail climbs gently between broom and whitebeam trees. Ignore all the paths that climb up to your left. You will reach the Les Trois Dents signpost.

(4) Take the path on the left towards Small Pass de l'Œillon and Col de Bote. The start is steep, with boulders that require the use of your hands. The climb then becomes gentler. You will come out at Small Pass de l'Œillon.

(5) Cross the D63 coming from Pélussin and take the path that enters the forest towards the shepherd's hut. Return to the road and the car park below Crêt de l'Œillon.

(6) Turn right onto the path that leads directly to the summit of Crêt de l'Œillon.

(7) Go around the TDF (Télédiffusion de France) relay station and enjoy the majestic 360° view. Return to the Col de l'Œillon via the uphill path.

(6) Cross the relay access road and take the path on the left that cuts across the inside of the Bessat road bend. Continue to Col de l'Œillon.

(5) Turn right to reach the Croix de l'Oeillon, cross the D 63 and take the track through the meadow by the cross. Cross the D 63 again and follow the path opposite, which passes behind the Hôtel de l'Œillon. Pass the hotel and, at the end of the left-hand bend, take the barely marked path that brings you back to the D 63 just before the Col du Gratteau, which marks the end of thesecond circular (altitude 1204).

(8) Turn right, at a 90° angle, onto the path that descends to the hamlet of Chaumienne.

(9) Shortly before the hamlet (altitude 1136), turn left onto the small road and follow it southwards to find a Y-junction a few hundred metres further on.

(10) Leave the road and turn left onto the path that climbs through a beautiful beech forest. This is the Black mountain bike route. Descend to reach the Saint-Sabin road (elevation 1078).

(11) Take it to the left, find the Croix de Saint-Sabin and then, on the right, the car park for this cross, which also marks the end of thethird circular (S/E).

Notes

Wear sturdy shoes for the rocky sections and the path through the boulders after the Trois Dents.
In summer and at weekends, the sites of the Chapelle de Saint-Sabin and Crêt de l'Oeillon are very busy.
Picnic tables are available near the car park.

Worth a visit

(4) You can reach and cross the Pic des Trois Dents, which is an easy climb, returning via a path below the south face.

A very beautiful walk in perfect weather: beautiful landscapes, alternating ridges and forest passages.
The duration of the hike is slightly overestimated.
I would even recommend it for families (with children who are not too young, though).

A beautiful walk in Pilat, magnificent views, shaded trails, everything you could want except... a strong wind picked up and crossing the small pass of the Oeillon proved tricky; we didn't feel safe! A hiker we met on our way, who was coming from Les 3 Dents, told us he had been scared when crossing them! And at the Crêt de l'Oeillon, it was foggy and cold, but you have to deal with unpredictable weather, one of the hazards of hiking. A hike to be repeated; thanks to the author.

Pilat is as magnificent as ever, especially with the sunshine we had today (a little cold and windy, but ultimately not too bothersome, as it prevented us from getting too hot).
On the other hand, Pilat is still poorly marked: we wanted to set off for the 3 teeth at point 4 and return via the south (under the Col du Gratteau)... An unspeakable ordeal amid the scree and broom, taking 2 hours to cover 4 km!
So we decided to take a detour, starting at point 6 and going to Crêt de la Perdrix (and back a little before point 8), but as we had booked at the Vert Ânes inn for 12 noon, we were caught short.
In short, we'll have to do it again.
As for the Vert Anes inn, go there with your eyes closed. It was our first experience there and it was delicious (entirely homemade from local products and artisan ice cream to die for!!!).

Great hike with beautiful views. The whole thing took 3½ hours, including a 30-minute lunch break. I highly recommend this route.

A beautiful hike, much of it through woodland, which is very pleasant in summer. Take the Three Teeth option for the panoramic views.

A wonderful walk with four teenagers (aged 13 to 17). Everyone enjoyed the diversity and beauty of the landscapes. Grandad came home exhausted... but happy!

A very beautiful hike through different landscapes and atmospheres. From start to finish, it was all worth it.
Personally, I had a little trouble following the description on certain sections, which meant I ended up walking a little further than I would have done if I had looked at the route map.
Despite hiking in the middle of summer, there were no issues with overcrowding.
I highly recommend it!

A very pleasant parish-specific to Brittany hike with beautiful views, including a 360° view from the relay antennas.
Be careful, some sections can be tricky to navigate; at point 4, the boulders can be difficult.
At point , I made a small mistake (which I wouldn't have made if I'd followed the map) and took the black dotted path, which is quite steep but goes straight to the top. This could be an alternative to avoid doing the 5 to 7 section there and back (but it's more difficult than the route on the map).
