Vallon de l'Arc, Arche du Portalas

A fairly challenging hike on little-used trails in the Petit Luberon. You will admire the Vallon de l'Arc, the Durance valley and pass under the Arche du Portalas, the most beautiful natural arch in the Luberon.

There are a few tricky sections: two walls to climb, approximately 6m and 4m high respectively, with good handholds.
Please note: a municipal by-law prohibits access between2 and 5 February and from the end of August. Please respect these instructions.

Description of the walk

Start at the top of Chemin du Coulet, near the EDF transformer (parking available).

(S/E) Take the dirt track that descends towards the north-east. At the bottom, after about 300m, continue to the left, crossing the barrier. Follow this beautiful path, which climbs steadily for 2.2km, to the Bergerie de la Tapi.

(1) Take the path on the left, leaving the sheepfold on your right. After about 1 km, you will reach a small car park on the left.

(2) Continue for about 50 metres and take the path that branches off to the left into the undergrowth. Climb up the Vallon de l'Arc, following the somewhat random yellow markings.
After about 1 km, you will encounter a rather difficult section. Climb over the 6-7 m wall, which cannot be avoided. There are good handholds, but caution is advised.

(3) Climb over this wall and continue to follow the yellow markings. Pass a second, slightly easier section (4-metre wall, again with good handholds) and continue north to the foot of the beautiful Roque des Bancs cliff with its numerous caves.

(4) Turn right and follow the blue markings (not always very clear) which, via fairly steep steps and climbs, will take you to the Petit Luberon ridge. Along the way, enjoy the magnificent views of the Vallon de l'Arc. Continue to a three-way junction.

(5) Turn right. After about 400 metres, you will reach the tarmac road of the Forêt de Cèdres. Follow it to a crossroads.

(6) Turn right onto a wide, straight path and reach the Portalas.

(7) Take advantage of the mini orientation table and the magnificent view over the Durance valley, then continue westwards but without staying on the ridge: descend slightly to the left to find a path that descends and heads west. There is a small cairn at the start of this path.
Continue downhill and you will soon see the Arche du Portalas, the most beautiful natural arch in the Luberon, slightly below you.

(8) Pass under this magnificent arch, which seems gigantic when you are underneath it. Continue down the path, sometimes through undergrowth, sometimes over scree. This path is fairly well marked but extremely steep. Join the forest road.

(9) Go up the road on the left. At the first hairpin bend, take the path on the left and continue to the Aire de Bosse.

(10) Take theGR®97on the right, which starts slightly above the forest road. Pass at the foot of Pic de l'Aigle and reach Bergerie de la Tapi.

(1) Continue left along the same path as on the way out and join the Chemin du Coulet (S/E).

A beautiful, challenging hike. The first part up to point 2 is not particularly interesting, except as a warm-up for what follows. At point 3, the going gets tough and you'll need to be in good physical shape. The walls you have to climb require caution but are not insurmountable, even on your own. From there, you can enjoy magnificent views. From points 5 to 7, enjoy the calm and the pleasant path through the woods, because after that, the going gets tough again. The descent from points 7 to 9 is really steep. The view and the passage under the arch are superb, but the path is indeed (very) dangerous... Once you reach the bottom, you'll be glad to be there. But the site is superb!

There are indeed two difficult passages, so it is best to take a rope for added safety.

Hello,
I wanted to expand and update the route information.

On the way there, we find two walls to climb over.

The first wall is about 6 metres high and has no climbing equipment such as ropes or chains.
There are good handholds for climbing it, and with a little physical fitness, it is easy to cross.

The second wall is 3 metres high and, at the time of writing, there is no equipment to help you cross it.
It also has good handholds for climbing and, with a little physical fitness, it is very easy to cross.

On the way back, it's true that, especially at the beginning, we face a rather steep slope.
But don't worry, if you are reasonably fit, it's fine.

Route taken on 31 January 2021. The scenery is superb, the trail through the wild and deserted Arc valley and the passage under the Portalas arch are a wonderful reward.
I did not see any signs prohibiting access to the Vallon de l'Arc due to nesting birds of prey, just a ban on drones and photography.
The first tricky section is equipped with a fixed rope and the second section is fairly easy.
Personally, I don't consider this hike difficult, but that's a matter of opinion. However, it's certain that the descent after the arch is very steep and a bit "risky".

It's true that this beautiful hike is difficult, with two climbing sections and a very steep descent.
But you can easily visit the Portalas Arch from the car park on Route des Cèdres...
