Description of the walk

(S/E) Departure from the car park of the Mérindol village hall.
Go up Rue des Écoles on the left, and at the fork, turn right onto Rue de la Fontaine.

(1) Turn left onto Rue du Vieux Four, which becomes Rue de la Muse, to reach the Muse sign at the junction with the Vieux Mérindol drovers' road.

(2) Follow theGR®6signs to the right and climb towards Vieux Mérindol. When the path joins a road, turn right and continue for 20 metres until you reach a fork.

(3) Leave the road and take the path on the left towards Petit Lubéron. Pass a house and you will come to a fork. Leave the path on the left and continue on the path on the right, which will go around a rocky outcrop and eventually rejoin the other path. Continue climbing on theGR®6, staying on the main marked path. It descends to rejoin theGR®97on a wide track.

(4) At the Sadaillan sign, turn right onto theGR®97towards Les Borrys - La Reveyrolles. Pass the cistern, continue and ignore the next path that branches off to the left towards a house.

(5) At the next crossroads, take the path on the left, marked with an orange cross, which heads towards Jas de Bourdillon. From there, there are no more signposts, except for cairns showing the way. 50m further on, a cairn indicates that you should take the path on the left to begin the "real climb" towards the Forêt des Cèdres.
This path, still on the ridge line, goes around the Tête du Mourre Blanc. As it approaches the rocks of the Croix de Fer, on a relatively flat section, it joins the yellow markings coming from the Combe de l'Euse on the left (west). Follow the yellow markings, which complete the climb to the Forêt des Cèdres at the Croix de Fer sign.

(6) Turn right onto the paved road towards the Forêt des Cèdres and continue for about 4 km. Pass the signs for l'Homme Mort and Falabrègue to reach the sign for le Pré de Roustan.

(7) Finally, leave the paved road and turn right (south) towards Portalas (orange and yellow signs). After leaving the forest, you will come to a wide balcony offering magnificent views of the Durance valley.
Don't get carried away by the beauty of the scenery; follow the yellow markings carefully.

(8) The trail continues eastward, skirting the cliffs, then begins to descend. When you reach the Portalas sign, turn right towards Lauris - l'Aire des Bosses. The trail descends a little more steeply to reach l'Aire des Bosses, which is not signposted but is easily recognisable by its cistern.

(9) Turn right onto the track and immediately left onto the path that climbs uphill (GR®97). Continue on theGR®, which will climb (ignore all other paths), then begin the descent, which is gentle at first and then leads into a beautiful shaded valley.
At the end of the valley, you will come to a forest track. Continue on theGR® to the right to reach the sign for La Tapi.

(10) After the ruined house, continue on the track on the left towards Les Borrys - La Reveyrolle. 700m further on, leave the path on the left and continue straight ahead on the same track. Turn right, leave the path that branches off at this bend and continue on the track for almost 300m.

(11) At the crossroads, leave the track and turn left onto the path. Stay on theGR® trail and ignore all other paths. When you reach a new track, turn left onto it.

(12) When you reach the La Reveyrolle sign, continue straight ahead on the track towards Les Borrys. Leave theGR®97on your right and continue following the orange and yellow markings.
800m further down, the track will come out onto a tarmac road.

(13) Turn right, ignore all the paths that branch off to the left and right, and continue straight ahead on Chemin des Huguenots. There are no more signs, so continue on Chemin des Huguenots for 1.5 km.

(14) At the junction with Chemin des Marres, continue straight ahead and leave Chemin des Huguenots, which branches off to the right.

(15) When you reach Avenue des Brulières, turn right towards Mérindol centre until you reach Rue de la Fontaine.

(1) Turn left to rejoin Rue des Écoles on the left, which will take you back to the car park (S/E).

Great route with panoramic views in very sunny weather. We didn't see many people once we reached the plateau of the cedar forest. However, the 4 km on tarmac in the forest and the 4 km between Les Borrys and Mérindol were not particularly pleasant. It might be more interesting to continue on the GR 97 for the last section...and less hard on the feet! It might also be possible to avoid the kilometres on tarmac in the forest by taking the track known as 'de la Bergerie', which comes back down to the cistern, but we couldn't find any signposts in that direction. (We did the 'de la Bergerie' walk in the other direction, starting from the cistern.)

A beautiful 7-hour 35-minute hike with generous sunshine and blue skies.
Nothing complicated except the length, 22 km. Approximately 700 metres of elevation gain.
Best avoided in the height of summer as there is little shade!

Very beautiful hike. However, between points 5 and 6, the trail is not very comfortable, uneven and very rutted.
But it's worth doing for the view over the Durance valley.

I started at the Font de L'Orme forest house and followed the sign towards the forest, then the yellow markings. I didn't have GPS reception until I reached the summit, which is easy to find if you follow the markings carefully.
The route is fairly easy. There is a bit of "climbing" and a slightly tricky section on the way down for ankles.
The Portalas view is definitely worth it.
Most of the route is in the shade. A large part of it is on the road, which is a shame.
Possible improvement: It seems to me that the return trip could be done without taking the road. However, I don't know the area well enough to venture there.
Thank you for this route.

In summer, it is advisable to depart early to avoid the heat and check with the local authorities for information on accessibility to the mountain range

A pleasant hike to do in spring. Some sections are a little difficult if you have children.
Beautiful view when the sky is clear.
Bring something to drink when it's hot.

A very beautiful hike with stunning views of the Durance valley.
The visit to the memorial in old Mérindol is well worth the detour and provides an insight into the tragic past of this small town. Thanks again to Slinky for suggesting such beautiful walks.
