Arche des Portalas from Puget-sur-Durance

A beautiful circular route that takes you from the Durance valley up to the Luberon ridges and under the impressive Portalas arch, with a very steep descent after the arch.

Description of the walk

Park at the top of Chemin du Coulet.

(S/E) Take the path that descends to the right. Ignore the path at the bottom of the valley and turn left to climb up opposite. When you see the vineyards, follow the path that runs alongside them towards the buildings of the La Verrerie estate.

(1) A few metres before the corner of the vineyard, leave the road and follow a path through the woods between the La Verrerie estate and the houses to reach the entrance to the château. Then take the road (closed to all vehicles) that climbs to the left.

(2) Leave the "La Verrerie" signposts and follow the path on the left, pass the first hairpin bend, then continue straight ahead uphill.

(3) At the junction with a wider track, continue climbing to the left. You will immediately find a pretty little cave on the right-hand side of the path. Continue climbing the path, pass the first hairpin bend immediately after a fire hydrant and continue for about 400 metres.

(4) At the next sharp left-hand bend, leave the path and take a small, unmarked trail that climbs up into the valley to join theGRP® Autour du Luberon further up.
(Note that it is also possible to continue along the path for 800 m and then turn right onto theGRP®.)

(5) Follow theGRP® on the right to reach the Aire de Bosse. Then take the marked path that climbs towards the cedar forest and Les Portalas.

(6) From Les Portalas, continue along the ridges. You will pass a fire cistern and shortly afterwards arrive at a panoramic view of the south with an orientation table. Continue along the ridge for about 40 m.

(7) A path, which is not very well marked but indicated by a small cairn, leads down to the arch via a slightly technical passage. You will reach the arch after about 200 m.
Pass under the arch to continue on a very steep path that descends southwards through the undergrowth and sometimes over scree to join a track at the bottom of the valley.

(8) Descend the track towards the west. After 1.5 km, you will come across signs indicating the climb to the ridges via the Vallon de l'Arc (trail closed from 1 March to 15 September to protect birds of prey).
Continue down the track to reach the Tapi crossroads.

(9) Take the path on the right (GRP® Autour du Luberon), towards Les Borrys and La Raveyrolle.

(10) Continue along the path (GRP®) ascending to the right, still towards Les Borrys. After 650 m, when you reach the plateau, continue to follow theGRP®, which leaves the track to follow a path on the left (cairn). You will rejoin the track further down. Descend for about 450 m.

(11) Just as you leave the wooded area, take a path on the left above the orchards. At the end of the orchards, after passing some beehives, continue along a path through the undergrowth towards the east.

(12) At the edge of the woods, follow the path southwards to rejoin the Chemin des Huguenots on the left, which will take you back to your starting point (S/E).

Notes

This hike is inspired by the one entitled Vallon de l'Arc, Arche du Portalas published by Harambee (thank you), which apparently cannot be done from 1 March to 15 September due to the municipal decree protecting birds of prey.

(10) To shorten the route, you can take the path that descends to the left and will take you to the bottom of thefirst descent of the route.

Worth a visit

View of the Durance valley.
The arch.

The hike is beautiful and it's impressive to pass under the arch. However, I think you pay a high price for this passage under the arch. I'm used to steep and slippery terrain, but it was frankly dangerous between points 7 and 8, and I had to slide down part of it on my bum.

I opted to set off from Les Borrys towards the Bosse area, following pretty single tracks through heath, pine forests, firebreaks and GRP trails around the Luberon and valleys. At the Bosse area, I headed towards Les Portalas with a short, easy climb over rocks. I made a magnificent discovery: the Portalas arch, emblem of the village of Puget sur Durance, visible once you are positioned behind it. The cedar forest begins on the Massif des Cèdres, contrasting with the landscapes of the climb. Walk and picnic in the forest - a must! - then return to Les Borrys via the Grand Caveau valley and the GRP. Different view of the Portalas arch on the descent. 18 km hike.

A very beautiful hike, with a stunning view of the arch from the summit.
We had some difficulty finding the path leading to the bottom (no cairn on the cliff), but in the end we got there without any problems. (The path can be seen from above.)
The passage under the arch is sometimes steep and slippery, but it's doable if you take your time. It's not dangerous or scary for anyone with a good head for heights.
The scree slope is fun and playful, just the way I like it, and best done at a run to avoid damaging your ankles!

A beautiful hike that I highly recommend!

A very pleasant, gradual climb. With magnificent views over the valley.
The descent after the arch is a little technical (follow the GPS route carefully to find your way). The rest of the descent through the scree requires caution.
Once you reach the trail, the rest of the descent is easy.

The climb up a shaded valley is long but interesting and quite physically demanding. The steepest section is before the final ascent from the crossroads at Les Bosses. The passage under the arch lives up to its reputation: really tricky... like the rest of the descent...The return to DFCI is also quite monotonous, so I took the recommended shortcut, crossing a short distance of private property after an area of beehives. In the end, I prefer the version starting from the cedar forest. A difficult hike, then.

Difficult hike!!! Please note: I do not recommend this hike for beginners or children.
There is a significant elevation gain to reach the top, which is difficult because there is no path, you have to cross the trail and you always have to bend down to climb because the vegetation is low. When you reach the top at the orientation table (Point 6), you can see the Portalas Arch and the entire south. Then there is a very dangerous and poorly marked descent, which is very slippery for about 1.5 km, where you have to hold on to branches to descend without falling while passing under the Arch. The hike ends on trails and a slightly repetitive walk through the woods, but overall it is a very beautiful hike with superb views.

Hello,
A beautiful hike, but a bit monotonous on the way back. Not recommended during hunting season, even though the hunters kindly pointed out the hunting areas to us.
