From Mérindol to Cucuron

This second stage of the Tour du Luberon takes place on the sunny side of the Durance valley, through the wooded valleys of the Luberon Nature Park. From Mérindol, the route follows the valley floor and, after passing Les Borrys, climbs towards the Pic de l’Aigle before descending into the Vallon du Gros Ubac, which it follows to reach the Combe de Recaute. It climbs its slope then crosses over to the Combe du Sautadou, which it descends before climbing up the Vallon des Séyes and reaching the Cap de Serre. Via the Vallon du Bon Dieu, it reaches Lourmarin and, running along the foot of the Grand Luberon, heads to Cucuron.

Description of the walk

(S) From the municipal stopover lodge in Mérindol, head north-west and retrace your steps from the previous day via Chemin des Rousseaux then Rue du Gascon. Then turn right into Rue des Anciens Combattants d'AFN. At the end, take a first turn right then left to join Rue du Stade. Go straight on and continue along Chemin de la Viane.

(1) At the end, turn left onto Chemin des Frigouliers. Cross Avenue des Brullières and continue straight ahead onto Chemin des Marres.

(2) After about 500 m, continue eastwards along Chemin des Huguenots, taking the cycle path lined with a power line. Immediately ignore a road on the left, then one on the right. Then ignore all turn-offs on the left. At a junction (car park), carry on for another hundred metres.

(3) At the Fork in the road, turn left onto Chemin du Degoutaou. Ignore the side paths before reaching a junction (signpost).

(4) Continue straight on with the GRE7 and the GRP® Lubéron and Monts de Vaucluse. After about a hundred metres, turn right onto a path. Head north-east and ignore the side paths.

(5) Reach the Piste des Borrys and follow it to the right. Stay on the marked track and ignore the side paths. You will then arrive at a three-way junction at a place called La Tapi (signpost, water tank, shelter).

(6) Turn right onto an ascending track to the right, still following the GR® and GRP®. After about 500 m (elevation 318 m), keep left and ignore another track on the right. Then ignore the paths on either side. About 1.5 km further on, cross a wide track and arrive at a junction (signpost, water tank).

(7) Follow the signposted path north-eastwards (roughly straight ahead). After a hairpin bend to the right, start a descent and reach a track (elevation 531).

(8) Follow the track to the left. Shortly afterwards, at a hairpin bend to the right, leave the track and take a path on the left. Descend the valley and rejoin the track at another hairpin bend (water tank).

(9) Head down the track to the left and reach a Fork in the road (signpost, elevation 368 m)

(10) Leave the track to climb the hairpin bends of the GRE7 to the left. Cross a ridge (alt. 440 m) and descend a path that winds down the side of the Combe du Sautadou. Arrive at a path at the bottom of the valley (signpost).

(11) Head down the GRE7 to the right. Join a track (elevation 324 m) and follow it to the right, continuing straight on. Still at the bottom of the valley, reach a junction at a place called Valbigonce (signpost, elevation 287 m).

(12) Turn left, ignore a few paths branching off to the right and head up the bottom of the Vallon des Séyes. This will take you to a junction (elevation 510).

(13) Take the first path on the right, at a sharp angle. Climb diagonally up the side of the Vallon de Jean Court. After a hairpin bend to the left, follow the bare ridge (East-North-East) to reach the summit (elevation 614). Descend to an unnamed small pass (signpost).

(14) Continue straight ahead along the ridge, then turn right (south) on the descent.

(15) At a fork in the road, take the left-hand path down towards the Vallon du Bon Dieu. Go round a hillock on the left and head south. Cross through the olive groves and join a road, the Chemin de Pierrouet (signposted).

(16) Follow the road to the left and cross the bridge over the Aigue Brun stream. After a right-hand bend, walk alongside a car park and arrive at a junction in the village of Lourmarin (signposted).

(17) Turn left, immediately join the D493 and follow it to the right. Turn onto the first street on the left, the Chemin d’Aguye. About 400 m further on, reach a Fork in the road (signposted).

(18) Take the Chemin du Gibas (GRE7) on the right. At the right-hand bend, ignore the path straight ahead and continue to a crossroads. Take the path going in the opposite direction on the right and, before it bends, keep left then immediately left again. Cross a path and arrive at a junction.

(19) Turn left, then, 30 m further on, right onto the Chemin de Faraud. Ignore the small side paths and stay on the main road until you reach a crossroads. Pass the first street on the left and cross the bridge at the next one. You will immediately come to a Fork in the road.

(20) Keep to the right onto Chemin de la Maguelonne. Ignore a road on the right and you’ll soon reach a Fork in the road.

(21) Continue straight ahead along the road, the Chemin du Jas. At the junction, in front of a long pond, take the dirt track straight ahead to join the Traverse du Chemin Sourd (elevation 361). Follow it to the right. At the Fork in the road, keep right and at the next two forks turn left onto the Chemin Sourd before reaching a junction.

(22) Turn right onto the Traverse de Font de Ville (against the flow of traffic) and join the D27. Turn left onto it and proceed to a junction in the village of Cucuron (signposted).

(23) Follow the D87 (Boulevard du Sud) to the right, towards the Lou Badareu campsite. At the crossroads, go down Chemin de la Ferrage against the flow of traffic to the right. At the fork in the road, continue left and rejoin the D27. Take it to the right, cross the bridge and reach a Fork in the road (sign).

(24) Stay on the D27 straight ahead. After 400 m, turn right towards the Lou Badareu campsite and the stopover lodge (E).
