Viaur Valley - Le Carrelié - Pont de Cirou - Pampelonne

A beautiful hike that will take you from the shady banks of the Viaur to the Pont de Cirou site. In Pampelonne, if you wish, you can visit the ruins of the Château de Thuriès, which overlooks the rocky bend of the Viaur. Finally, to finish, stop at the Vieux Mirandol viewpoint before returning to your car.

Description of the walk

Starting point: Carrelié church square. To get there, follow the D905 from Mirandol-Bourgnounac, then after about 800 metres, turn right towards Carrelié. Park your car at the side of the road near the church.

(S/E) Turn back to the square and take theGRP® (yellow and red markings) on the left towards the Pont de Cirou (signposted). The latter quickly descends towards the Viaur, which you follow to the dam and then to the Pont de Cirou.

(1) Do not cross the bridge but continue straight ahead, then leave the road and turn slightly left, following the signs towards Moulin de Pignac, a beautiful site on the banks of the Viaur.

(2) At the mill, ignore a path that climbs to the right (not shown on the IGN map), marked by a beautiful spruce tree, and continue along the riverbank, passing between the buildings. Follow the Viaur for about 4.5km. The path is easy and obvious.

(3) Stop for a moment to admire the hamlet of La Roque on the other side of the river and its bridge over the Viaur. Continue past the old Tourène mill and a second bridge over the Viaur.

(4) At the fork, ignore the path that climbs to the right towards Prunet and turn left.
The path climbs steeply then descends just as steeply to pass a small rocky outcrop overlooking the Viaur. After about 900 metres, theGRP® turns right and climbs towards the village of Pampelonne, which you will reach quickly.

(5) Leave theGRP® and turn right. At the junction with the D78, cross over and continue straight ahead, almost opposite, to quickly reach a fork.

(6) Take the second road on the right. Immediately after, at the new crossroads, continue straight ahead to join the D53, which you follow for 100 metres to the left.

(7) Take the path on the right (yellow markings) and continue to a crossroads.

(8) Turn right, following the yellow markings. Cross a farm track and continue straight ahead to climb up to the hamlet of La Baraque de Bernard, where you will join the D78.

(9) Cross over, turning left, then take the first road on the right. Cross the road leading to Prunet on the right and continue straight ahead. Ignore the paths on the right, which lead to the Laquet farm and Puech de Seyrissol, to reach the Landes crossroads, with an old farmhouse on the left.

(10) Turn right towards Liaumiès (road sign). You will soon reach this hamlet and cross it straight ahead. The road gives way to a path that descends towards the Liaumiès stream. This path turns 180° after crossing the stream, passes in front of a house on the right and joins a small road. Cross and continue straight ahead and uphill to the right.

(11) At the crossroads, turn left onto the path, which is very wide at the start but narrows later on and leads back to Moulin de Pignac.

(2) Turn left to follow the Viaur in the opposite direction to the start until you reach the Pont de Cirou.

(1) Cross the bridge and then follow the D58 uphill to the right for about 1.5 km.

(12) Turn left onto another small road that leads to the old Garène farm and the Accrobranche adventure park shortly afterwards. You will reach the Viaur, which you follow to arrive at the hamlet of La Calquière. The path (no horses allowed) crosses a property and leads to a gate that opens onto a small road.

(13) Go through the gate (remember to close it behind you) and follow the road downhill to the left towards the dam. Cross over and follow the road uphill towards the site of the old Mirandol.

(14) Stop to enjoy the beautiful view of the valley. Then continue along the road to the starting point, next to the church of Carrelié (S/E).

Notes

Good hiking shoes.

(5) If you have the time and energy, you can continue on theGRP® and visit the site of the old Château de Thuriès. This site, on a bend in the river, overlooks the Viaur and is well worth the detour.

Worth a visit

The Point de Cirou site, as rural as you could wish for, with its pretty restored houses.

The Moulin de Pignac site, ideal for a picnic.

The site of the old Château de Thuriès in Pampelonne, on the rocky bend of the Viaur.

The viewpoint at Vieux Mirandol, just before Carrelié.

A beautiful circular route starting from the Cirou bridge, suitable for families and not too long, without going through Pampelonne.

Much of the hike along the banks of the Viaur is very pleasant. There are a few fallen trees along the route, but nothing too serious. The scenery is superb. A real treat. However, two sections on the road spoil the fun a little... A shame.

Hello
We tried a variation of this route starting from the Thuriés campsite, climbing up to Pampelonne via a beautiful path that passes by the Château de Thuriés. We then continued along the path to the Cirou bridge and followed the GR country trail back along the Viaur to return to our starting point. We wanted to avoid going back up to Pampelonne to return to our starting point by staying along the Viaur, but at the end there was a rocky barrier that was difficult to cross, and we had a lot of trouble finding a way through. Otherwise, this route would be very nice, running along the Viaur for more than 9 km. This route, including this variation, is a total of 18 km.

Note on the route:
I think it's best to avoid the RD53 road that leads to "La Barraque" and instead take the path at Liaumiès and head towards "Puech de Serieyssol" = the "des champs au moulin" route to Castagnes; there, turn right to reach "La Barraque".
After Pampelonne, the descent towards the Viaur is slippery in wet weather.
Some sections along the Viaur may be flooded when the river overflows.

Why more than 12 hours? Because we walk very slowly and took the time to set up camp along the way at the edge of the forest along the Viaur.
The hike is very well described, easy to follow and very rural.
No problem finding water.
A few difficult sections (be careful if you are carrying heavy loads), but overall it is fairly easy, especially without a load.
There are a few fallen trees on the path that you will need to either go around or climb over.
Other than that, it was pure bliss!
