The Lo Puech Pounchut Trail

From the square in front of Mirandol-Bourgnounac Town Hall, a path will take you to the Pont de Cirou, an ancient Roman road, on the banks of the Viaur.
Take care on the first few technical kilometres by mountain bike up to the Pont de Cirou. This 14th-century bridge, the oldest crossing over the Viaur, was used to link the Aveyron to the Tarn. Along the Viaur you will discover the Moulin de Pignac,

This route can be done on foot or by mountain bike (marked for both mountain biking and walking).

Description of the walk

Start from the square in front of Mirandol-Bourgnounac town hall. Follow the red MTB signposting No. 2 all the way

(S/E) Join Avenue du Viaur, which leads to the centre of the village (follow the MTB signposting). Take the second alley on the left. You’ll come out onto Rue des Sapinettes; follow it to the right. Take the first street on the left, Rue des Hirondelles. At the junction, go straight on into Rue des Rossignols. Follow the signs and head downhill to the ecological treatment plant.

(1) Leave the plant on your left and follow a path to the Borie farm. Cross a road and continue straight ahead on a good, wide track. Further on, you’ll reach the tarmac and come to a junction with the D80.

(2) Take the path on the left and head downhill. Take care at the bottom, as the path is slippery in wet weather. You will reach the church at Pont de Cirou.

(3) Turn right. Cross the D80 and continue straight on, following the Viaur on your left. You will then reach the Moulin de Pignac.

(4) Continue along the path and, after a few dozen metres, take the path on the right and move away from the river. Climb a steep slope. Ignore a path on the left, then turn right and continue climbing. Reach the plateau and continue south-east (beautiful view of the Ségala and the Viaur valley).

(5) At the T-junction (the hamlet of Boyals on the left), turn right and head downhill.

(6) Cross a road and continue downhill. Cross the Ruisseau de Liaumiès via a ford and climb up the other side. Pass through the hamlet of Liaumiès, keeping a southerly direction. At the exit, at a fork, take the left-hand path.

(7) At the T-junction at a place called Les Landes, turn right. After about a hundred metres, first turn right then left to follow the MTB signpost no. 2 along a path between the fields heading west-south-west. Come out onto a road and follow it to the right.

(8) At the junction, turn right. At the next junction, continue straight on to the hamlet of Dèzes.

(9) Turn left onto a good track that runs between the fields.

(10) Just before a tarmac road, at the bottom of the valley, follow a track that climbs to the left (mountain bike markings). At the T-junction, turn right, rejoin a road and follow it to the right.

(11) At the Stop sign, first turn left then right to cross the D905 and take a small road which soon gives way to a track. Immediately take thefirst track on the left and come out onto a small road.

(12) Follow it to the right.

(13) Cross two streams.

(14) At the junction, turn right. After about 400 m, take a good track on the right (north-east, MTB signposted). This will take you to the hamlet of Garret.

(15) Follow the road to the left, passing a football pitch on the left-hand side.

(16) At the roundabout, take Avenue du Viaur straight ahead (MTB signpost no. 2). Continue straight on until you reach the town hall (S/E).

An interesting start, but the rest wasn’t all that exciting.
At the farm, we almost turned back because the cow dung was so deep we were sinking into it; we climbed over the fence – it was a laugh.

A very pleasant walk, with lovely scenery and charming hamlets all along the route, and the stretch along the banks of the Viaur is simply magical!
Best done early in the morning during the summer months as the second half is in open country.

A lovely walk – make sure you follow the route shown on the app, as the yellow markings aren’t visible in some places.
In hot weather, make sure you’re well equipped as part of the walk takes you along fields.

There are some lovely views along most of the route. Do take the time to stop off at the Pont de Cirou, which is a
, as well as, a little further on, the Moulin de Pignac. We highly recommend this walk.
