Description of the walk

Park at Place de la Grève.

(S/E) With your back to the old abbey, take the first street on the left, just before the small stone bridge where there is a splendid oriel window. Follow the Loir canal to the end of the street.

(1) Turn left onto the D17, taking the left-hand pavement, and cross the Loir. Leave the car park and the road on your right.

(2) At this fork, staying on the same pavement, turn into Rue de Saint-Martin, heading towards Saint-Martin du Péan-Jupeau.
At the bend, continue along Rue du Val du Loir.

(3) At this fork, keep left towards "les bords du Loir" and continue along this road to Vouvray (picnic tables in a green, cool spot). Take the footbridge crossing the Loir.

(4) Immediately after the footbridge, turn right and continue to Saint-Maurice, crossing through the village. On the way out, continue, leaving the road on your right, until you reach a fork.

(5) Turn right, continue past the old campsite and the old swimming pool, and follow a long stone wall. At the end of the wall, continue straight on until you reach the D27.

(6) At the Stop sign, turn left.

(7) At this roundabout with the bell tower, turn left to reach the harbour master’s office, then Place de la Grève (S/E).

The first half of the route is urban (no surprise there) and rather uninteresting, apart from the start in front of the psychiatric hospital. The route is tarmac all the way, with a few sections on fairly busy roads (you have to step aside to let cars through). So I don’t think I’ll be doing this walk again.

Thank you, Cacienne, for your comments, but as I’ve already mentioned, on such a short route “it’s hard to avoid ‘urban’ areas”, though Bonneval is a small historic town that’s well worth starting your walk in the town centre so you can appreciate its charm.

It’s a shame that a large part of the walk takes place in an urban area, especially the first third, which is of no interest whatsoever, apart from the very start along the Loir with its beautiful buildings. Nevertheless, it’s an easy 6 km walk, with the last two thirds being much more pleasant.
It’s a shame not to follow the lovely River Loir for much longer.
Bonneval is a charming little town that’s well worth a detour.

Thank you for your feedback.
It’s true that when setting off from the town centre, it’s hard not to end up on ‘urban’ roads, but Bonneval is a small historic town that’s well worth starting your journey in the town centre to appreciate its charm.

A fairly "urban" route, with a few stretches through the countryside that are still well worth a visit.
Several buildings worth a visit.
A very easy walk, a pleasant stroll.
Recommended for "light walkers".
