A circular walk in the vicinity of Waldkirch in the Black Forest

A lovely hike in the Black Forest near Waldkirch, 30 km north-east of Freiburg (Freiburg im Breisgau) and 40 km north of Titisee.
You can admire the countryside and woodland scenery from the top of the Kandel at an altitude of 1,241 metres, a popular spot for motorcyclists and paragliders.
You’ll pass by a rockfall, Kandel Rock, where 2,000 m³ of rock collapsed in 1981.

Description of the walk

Start at the car park near the summit of the Kandel on the L186.

(S/E) The start of the path is at the top of the car park. The path heads north-east through the stubble fields. After 50 metres, it splits into two. The one on the left is the Kandelhohenweg.
Follow the one on the right. A few hundred metres further on, it joins a forest track, the Josef Seger Weg. At the next junction, turn left then right until you reach the next junction.

(1) At this junction, the signposts indicate that you should follow the Josef Seger Weg to the left. Take in the beautiful forest.

(2) Join the forest road and, a little further on, turn left. About 250 metres further on, turn left to rejoin the road.

(3) Cross the tarmac road leading up to the Kandel and continue straight ahead, still on the Joseph Seger Weg. After a bend to the left, the path runs alongside the road, heading south-east and then due south, until it reaches a junction just before a left-hand bend.

(4) At this junction, do not turn right. Continue along the Joseph Seger Weg, which branches off to the left a few metres further on and crosses the Kandelbächle stream (a small stream on the Kandle).
Cross a rocky area formed during the 1981 rockslide. Information boards in German, English and French. Pass a path on the left, then cross a forest track.

(5) At the next junction, a short detour to the right takes you to a viewpoint where you can admire the panoramic view. Return the way you came.
(5) Follow the path as it climbs. This path is called the Zweitälersteig (the ‘Two Valleys’ climb). At the Fork in the road immediately after, take the left-hand branch, which climbs steeply.

(6) At the junction that appears after a few hundred metres, continue to the left and then, immediately afterwards, turn left again towards the north-east.
Take the hairpin bend to the right, heading south (do not take the path on the left which descends back into the valley), and you’ll reach a large meadow and then the viewpoint at an altitude of 1,242 metres. A very lovely view.

(7) Continue along the path on the left to reach the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

Start from the car park towards the summit of the Kandel: 79271 Simonswald on the L186: the road from Waldkirch to Sankt Peter.

At the summit of the Kandel there is a small ski resort in winter.
In summer, the road is very popular with motorcyclists, many of whom gather in the car park.
Near the summit, there is also a paragliding launch site. It’s lovely to watch.

Worth a visit

Kandel Rock, where 2,000 m³ of rock collapsed in 1981. Its upper part is called the “Devil’s Pulpit” because legend has it that this is where witches meet with the devil on Walpurgis Night (from 30 April to 1 May). Source: https://fr.qwertyu.wiki/wiki/Kandel_(mou...)
