Car park at the station at the entrance to La Chaise-Dieu on the road from Le Puy-en-Velay (motorhome area at the far end of the car park).
(S/E) Cross the road running alongside the car park and turn right onto Avenue de la Gare, which leads down into the centre of the village.
500 metres further on, after passing the foot of the grand staircase leading to the abbey church, turn right onto the uphill lane (Rue de l’Aumône) which runs alongside the abbey church.
Cross Place Lafayette and exit via the Porte du For (at the top on the left). Then take Rue Georges Cziffra on the left.
(1) After 500m, at the large crossroads, carry on straight ahead (northwards) along the Thiers–Vichy road (D906). Follow this road for 300m.
(2) Turn left onto the small road towards the village of Baffour. Continue north on this road to reach Baffour; pass through the village, staying on the main road, which then turns west towards the hamlet of Mozun. Just before the hamlet, ignore a first small grassy track on the left and, immediately afterwards, a second, larger stony track on the right; carry on straight ahead to reach Mozun.
(3) Take the path that leads into the forest, passing an unoccupied farmhouse on the left-hand side of the path. At the fork in the road, turn right, ignoring a path branching off to the right to stay on this well-marked path. You will then reach a three-way junction.
(4) Turn left onto the wider track which descends towards the south-west. At the next crossroads, carry on straight ahead, crossing the track you come to. Reach Boissieux and walk down into the hamlet, keeping to the main road.
(5) Pass under the bridge of the old railway line to join the La Chaise-Dieu–Saint-Germain-l’Herm–Issoire road (D499). Turn right onto it. Then take the first grassy track on the left (heading south-west) and continue straight on to join another track.
(6) Turn left onto this track; you will soon join theGRP®® Robe de Bure and Cotte de Mailles trail, marked in yellow and red.
(7) Take thisGR®® to the right and head towards the hamlet of Lachaux. Keep to the right on the road leading down towards the bottom of the hamlet and continue, following the markings, until you reach another junction.
(8) Leave theGRP®® and turn left towards the south to reach the hamlet of Valentin.
(9) Carry on and, when you reach the small stream known as the Senouire, take the grassy path on the left which climbs eastwards and leads to a mobile phone mast.
(10) Take the main track on the left, then carry on straight ahead, crossing the D4 twice to reach La Chaise-Dieu.
(11) Cross the road once more and follow the small street on the left (no entry), then continue left along Rue Baniche to reach the centre of the village.
Opposite the grand steps of the abbey church, take Avenue de la Gare to the right, but just after the patisserie, take the small arched passageway on the left. Walk along Place de l’Écho on the left, past a small square on the right, then turn right into Rue Pablo Picasso to reach the station car park (S/E).
