Description of the walk

This route follows the entire Balirando "Puy de Peyronère" hike.
Yellow markings (paint marks or smallPR®® signs)
Park in the church car park.

(S/E) With your back to the church, head towards the "Place Dourif" bus shelter and go to the Balirando hiking sign. Pass the war memorial and continue along the street until you reach a crossroads opposite the Château de Murol. Turn left to pass the information sign, then turn right to go under the footbridge and continue along Rue du Bas Mur, which runs alongside the château on your right.

(1) Go down the stairs on the left and you will come to a crossroads. Go straight on towards the Pont de la Monne and cross the river on this venerable bridge.

(2) On the other side, a detour to the right will allow you to discover two wash houses (one of which is covered, information panel).

(2) On your return, continue to the right and immediately, at the intersection, take the path (an old minor road) going up to the right. You will reach a crossroads with four paths.

(3) Follow the wide path to the left, ignoring the side paths. At the fork in the path marked with a post bearing a small yellowPR®® sign and a mountain bike sign, turn right. You will reach a crossroads with a hiking sign.

(4) Turn right towards "Route du Puy de Peyronère".

(5) Ignore a path descending to the left.

(6) Ignore another path leading down to the left. You will reach a T-junction; follow the path to the left. The Château de Travers will come into view on the right (wine estate). You will arrive at the access road to the château.

(7) Turn left and you will immediately reach the D74. Follow it to the right for about 400 m. This is a speed-limited road as it crosses Saint-Sandoux at this point, and there is little traffic with a fairly wide hard shoulder. You will reach a crossroads (bus shelter).

(8) Follow the path diagonally to the right, then take the first path on the right, which climbs and soon offers a view of the Monne valley (the large modern building on the other side is Randol Abbey).

(9) Further up, at the T-junction, follow the path that descends (steeply) to the left and leads to a wider path. Follow it to the right.

(10) 200 m further on, change direction by taking a path on the left. Ignore a path on the right further on, then arrive at a T-junction.

(11) Continue to the right and, 200 m further on, be sure to change direction by turning onto a path on the left. Further on, the path becomes a trail that continues downhill to a small bridge over the Monne.

(12) Cross the river and climb back up to join a path. Follow it to the right, pass under the rocky outcrop supporting the Château de Saint-Saturnin, continue along a street and reach a crossroads, opposite a very old circular fountain. On the left is the Château de Saint-Saturnin (information panel). Follow the street to the right, pass behind the beautiful Romanesque church and, on the small square, note a hiking signpost.

(13) Follow the signs for "Route du Puy de Peyronère" to the right, via Rue Noble. You will come to the D8 at a roundabout.

(14) Continue straight ahead along the lane alongside the D8 to return to Saint-Amant.

(15) When you see the old village and the castle, turn right and go down a few steps to a small park offering a beautiful view of the village and the valley. Continue along the path and then along a narrow street that joins a main road. Follow it to the right and, at the crossroads, continue straight on Rue des Réveillons, then, at the next intersection, turn right onto Rue du Bas Mur and you will find yourself at the foot of the castle.

(1) Retrace your steps to return to the church car park (S/E).

A very beautiful walk with stunning views of St Saturnin and the surrounding area. We encountered only one difficulty, but the beauty of the site makes it well worth the effort
