(S) This walk begins on the square in front of the church entrance, where you will discover which French President was baptised in the church of Saint-Amant-Tallende. Opposite the church entrance, turn right. Walk to the war memorial at the end of the square, on the central reservation of Place Dourif. Here, you will learn that Henri Dourif is the father of an actor who starred in a very famous American film trilogy. Next, take the street in front of you. You will arrive at Place Pallet, where you will see a fountain along the road. It is located on Place Pallet, named after the first mayor of the commune in 1789. Head there for a beautiful view of Murol Castle and answer the question about the century in which it was built. Cross the road using the pedestrian crossing, then turn right towards the castle. Stop in front of the entrance gate.
(1) After learning a little more about the owner of the castle, the walk takes you to the coat of arms engraved above the gate, which depicts two hands clasped together but with a distinctive feature. Facing the gate, turn left and go under the footbridge into Rue du Bas Mur. Stop at the stairs on your left, where you will be asked to answer a question. Go down the stairs and turn left. Follow the sign for "Pont de la Monne" to the left to reach the beginning of the bridge (you can stay at the beginning of the bridge or go to the middle).
(2) From this bridge, you have a beautiful view of the town's second castle, the Château de la Tour Fondue, which was once the residence of the painter Victor Charrenton. Some of his paintings are featured in the quiz. From the bridge, retrace your steps and turn left onto Rue du Petit Coudert. Stop about halfway down the street to learn why the street is so named. Continue along Rue du Petit Coudert. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue des Réveillons. Stop at number 5.
(3) Look at the sculpture on the keystone and discover its meaning. Opposite number 5, continue to your left. At the end of the street, turn right onto Rue du Bas Mur and stop in front of a window, just before the door at number 6, to learn more about this mysterious trapdoor in the wall.
(4) Continue along Rue du Bas Mur. At the end, take the street on your left, Rue du Château. When you reach the small parking area, turn right to reach the fountain in Place du 11 Novembre. Here, you can see the heads carved on the fountain and learn their names. From the fountain, retrace your steps and, at the small car park, continue straight ahead along Rue des Boucheries. At the bend, continue to the left and stop in front of number 10 on your right.
(5) You can admire this magnificent, typically medieval façade. Opposite this half-timbered house, retrace your steps and, at the intersection, take the street on the left, Rue Léger Gauthier. Continue to the middle of the street, towards number 7. This street was once called "Rue de l'Enfer" (Hell Street), and you can find out why here. Continue to the end of the street, then turn right onto Place Darteyre. Cross the street at the pedestrian crossing to reach the steps leading up to the town hall. Just like you, a French head of state once stopped on this square. After answering the question, you can watch a short video of his visit in 1959 (E).
