Description of the walk

Meet at the departure point located at the Lake Salagou recreation centre. To get there easily by car, go through Clermont-L'Hérault and follow the signs for 'Lac du Salagou'. Park your car in the recreational centre's car park.

(S/E) Cross the car park and take the PR (Yellow waymarking) south of the lake which quickly heads in a westerly direction.

(1) Here, you will start to follow along the hills which overlook the lake (Mont Mars, the Grande Montagne and Montagne de Liausson), as well as the village of Liausson which you can see in the distance.

(2) When you reach a car park, after having gone past the small Rouens peninsula, leave the lakeside to the left, and then head to the right towards the Détroits Pass, going along the D148.

(3) At a 90° bend in the road, take the path straight ahead, go over the ford on the extreme western edge of the lake and head to the right (north).

(4) Around 400m further on, you will see lots of runoffs which flow down into Lake Salagou. The paths and even the roads are often submerged, at least in the winter. Continue on this path, staying as close to the lake as possible until you reach Celles, which is an abandoned hamlet (expropriation in the 1960s during the flooding of the Salagou dam. Source: Wikipedia) - nice to visit.

(5) On arriving in Celles, go around Mont Cébérou, either via the north (to the left), or via the south along the lakeside. The route I took, and the one shown on the map, is the one to the north. It stays more or less parallel to the D148 by making a wide curve to the right in order to reach a campsite and a hamlet with gîtes.

(6) At this point, you have completed about a half of the route. Take the left to continue on your route between the Auverne Plateau and Lake Salagou. You are on the horse riding route which is also the PR. You need to climb a bit here. The view is breathtaking! From this location on the hills, you can see the Salagou dam. It is quite impressive from this height.

Go past the paths on the right which go downhill towards the lake and follow the PR instead up to the fork in the path which goes straight downhill to the dam.

(7) Continue on to the left, going down the valley and turn right at an acute angle.

(8) Pass through the hamlet of Mas Audran (the stream bed at the bottom of the dam) at a good pace and then climb up to the dam. Once you've arrived at the dam, all you need to do then is to follow the road to the right in the direction of the recreational centre.

(9) When coming out of the wide bend to the left, leave the road and take the path which takes you back to the car park ((S/E)).

Practical information

For this hike, you need to: have a good pair of waterproof hiking shoes; take a bag with an extra pair of socks; at least two litres of water per person (I took three); a hat because you are very exposed (there isn't much shade); a poncho just in case; your mobile phone; a map; a compass; a first aid kit; and carbohydrate-rich food because you will need plenty of energy (around 8 hours of walking).

If you lose your way, don't worry, continue on with your hike by ensuring that the lake is always on your right. On this circuit, the central element is the lake, which acts as a natural reference point.

In the nearby area

Lake Salagou is surrounded by small mountains and plateaus with heights of between 300 metres and 535 metres in altitude. It is 50 metres deep and has a surface area of 700 hectares. Its water reservoir has a volume of 102 million of m3 and the water level is 139 above sea level.

The different mountains around the Lake, the recreational centre, the Salagou dam, small villages, the campsite, Notre-Dame des Clans, etc.

This was a solo hike on a Wednesday, so it wasn't very busy. Done in 5 hours 35 minutes. Beware, at this time of year and after the heavy rain of the last few weeks, I had to make a diversion for a passage at km 6 which was submerged and then I had to cross twice in 10cm of water because the passages were under water and no diversions was possible.
Otherwise, it was a great walk!

A pretty circuit alternating easy and more technical sections, with beautiful views over the lake,
a few tricky sections when it rained.

parish specific to Brittany. Cross the dam to avoid the last loop.

I loved doing this walk. The scenery is sublime. The tour of the Lac du Salgou is well worth the effort.
There weren't many people around when I did this walk, but that's probably due to the time of year (autumn).

We followed the mountain bike route and juggled with the many paths that run alongside the lake. It's a lovely walk, but should be avoided in very hot weather.

A beautiful walk in an extraordinary landscape. Instead of going round the Cébérou, we walked along the lake on unmarked paths, which were a bit strenuous but wilder. The end by the Mas d'Audran, which is entirely on road, is long and arduous and we regretted not having crossed over the dam as other hikers do, which is theoretically forbidden but seems to be tolerated...:whistle

A pleasant walk with superb views ... we did it on a very hot day 🥵 and it's advisable to bring 2 litres of water per person as there are very few passages in the shade.
We did it in 6h45 without the lunch break (27.5 OMS on our GPS) .
The least pleasant part, but also due to tiredness at the end of the route under a very hot sun 🌞 is the stretch around the dam to the finish.

It was our first hike with Visorando The place is magical and you get a real eyeful We stopped halfway along the route to enjoy the place and it was great We made a diversion to get as close as possible to the lake and walked along La Sure The route was 5 km longer but it was worth the diversions! We didn't like the stretch of road after the dam to get back to the water sports centre.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to give your opinion.

By "Map route" we don't mean assessing the waymarking, but the conformity of the route as it appears on the map with the reality on the ground.

Visorando does not recommend waymarking because it can be modified, erased... whereas the indications on the ground are stable information.

Visorando provides a detailed description, a 1:25,000 scale IGN map and, if you find it difficult to find your way around, Visorando offers a free virtual signposting system: a GPS Application.

A+

We did this walk starting from the Vailhes car park, the route is well signposted as far as the Barrage, then you have to follow the Visorando signs, which are imperfect, or follow the signposts for mountain bikes.
Actual time 6:00 with the breaks and the many times we had to look for our route, so 5:00 of walking.
A disappointing walk, except for the section from the Vailhes car park to the Barrage.

We did it leaving from the dam at the top right and returning at the bottom; we went along the lake to avoid the tour of Mont Cébérou, there were a few difficult sections and we ended up on our backsides in the ruffes.meeting nudists.a bit of trouble finding the way to the Mas de Riri because of the mobile homes with gardens.one moment we took off our shoes to cross a ford which did a lot of good for our overheated feet. We set off at 8.45am and arrived at 5.15pm, taking our time. 23.5 kms in total. Super happy with our day!

Nice walk with a few surprises... We decided not to go round Mont Cébérou at Celles and continued along the edge of the lake... which was partly flooded, so we had to surf on the ruffe dunes. It was sporty, but a lot of fun. Another variation: at the finish, we turned right at the dam to avoid the final loop via Mas Audran.
We also took a footbath on 2 occasions, as spring was very rainy this year.
A very good day with no monotony.
