Description of the walk

Park on Rue Virgile or Rue de l’Abbé Dorna. The route starts in front of the inn “La Maison”, at the red gate.

(S/E) Follow the D8 southwards towards Rochetaillée.

(1) After about 300m, turn left onto Allée Jacques Thoinet. Pass the Saint-Étienne martial arts school and continue straight on.

(2) At the end of the tarmac road, continue along the Sentier de l'Aqueduc des Fontaines, taking the right-hand path at the first fork.

(3) At the junction with a small tarmac road, continue straight on.

(4) Join the D8 and follow it eastwards. Continue in this direction until you reach Rochetaillée Castle.

(5) Then turn left onto the Route des Écheneaux. Opposite the car park, turn right onto the Route du Mas. Follow this road, with several hairpin bends, to the hamlet of Le Breuil.

(6) In the hamlet, turn right. At the end of the tarmac road, continue along the path opposite.

(7) At the fork, take the path on the left and continue, ignoring a turn-off on the left.

(8) At the next fork, turn right towards La Driguière.

(9) At La Driguière, turn right onto Chemin Victor Jourjon, which takes you to Charteloup.

(10) Then leave Chemin Victor Jourjon and continue along the path on the right. Ignore a path on the right that descends towards the stream and head down the rocky, steep path (take care).

(5) At the foot of the castle, head towards the town hall square, then climb the steps leading to the church. Cross the church square and then go down the steps to reach a car park. Cross the car park and join the road leading up to the cemetery. Walk along the left-hand side of the cemetery and continue to the end of the road.

(11) Then take the path on the right and follow it, ignoring the turnings on the left. As you go round the hill, admire the magnificent view on your right.

(12) Go through the barrier for vehicles. After about a hundred metres, turn right onto Rue du Docteur Paul Michelon. Pass the police dog training school and then the Saint-Étienne rural and family centre.

(13) Once at the bottom of Rue Michelon, near the stadium, turn left into Rue Virgile. Pass the Lycée Benoit Fourneyron. The road climbs slightly; pass under the École de la Réjaillère. Continue straight on and descend slightly. At the junction with Rue Abbé Dorna, turn left to return immediately to the starting point (S/E).

A lovely hike with some good climbs. I opted for a detour via La Madone on the way back.

This is a good route suggestion from St Etienne to Rochetaillee.
Parking at the Portail Rouge in St Etienne is limited near the start of the route during school holidays, particularly on Rue Virgile. Personally, I prefer to start at the Rochetaillee town hall car park and do a circular route down to the Portail Rouge and back up to Rochetaillee. Alternatively, do this hike outside of school holidays.
You can also avoid sections of road by taking the paths, particularly when climbing up to the heights of Rochetaillee.

A lovely walk. Not too strenuous – a few hills to climb, but nothing too difficult.
Magnificent panoramic views.
It’s a shame that towards the end you have to walk along tarmac roads.
But it’s still a lovely walk that’s well worth doing again.

Completed in 3½ hours at a normal to brisk pace, with two breaks. Done in 30-degree heat; there’s plenty of shade and sunshine, which makes it really pleasant. No major difficulties. Accessible from Saint-Etienne by bus.
Magnificent views – remember to look behind you, as the best views are often behind you.
Head up to the castle if you can; it’s small but nice, and for those who collect geocaches, there’s one in the area.
I didn’t see any other freely accessible drinking water points apart from the one at the entrance to Rochetaillée at the start of the route, but you do pass houses along the way, so you can ask if needed.
