Tour of Cap d'Erquy via the beaches

This route goes around the tip of Cap d'Erquy via the beaches on the north side and passes by the old pink sandstone quarries on the south side.
These quarries were in operation until 1974 and date back to the 18th century. A superb walk, especially in good weather, which is often the case. The route is lined with gorse and broom, which you may be lucky enough to see in bloom. The northern part of the route is a little wilder and more exposed to the wind, but at high tide the waves are a magnificent sight.

Description of the walk

Parking at Guen Beach.

GR®34, white and red markings

(S/E) Leave the car park on the left, walk along Guen Beach and join Avenue Léon Hamonet.

(1) Take the tarmac road on the left, then the first dirt track on the right. Follow the coastal path to Pointe de la Mare aux Rets: enjoy the view and the sound of the waves and the surf if the tide is high.

(2) Continue on your way, ignoring the paths on the left. You will reach the Notre-Dame-des-Bruyères-des-Coteaux-et-des-Bois devotional fountain, known as the Fontaine de Lourtuais. The fountain is famous for never running dry.

(3) Continue to Cap d'Erquy: enjoy the view, you can "almost" see America on a clear day.

(4) Resume the route on the coastal path, pass the small car park at Fossé Catuelan and follow the tarmac road to the old guardhouse.

(5) Leave the road and take the path on the right that leads to the old ballast kiln, visible from the car park.

(6) Continue towards the lakes and old quarries. You will reach the Petit Lac Bleu, formed in the excavations of the old quarry.

(7) Continue on your way to the Grand Lac Bleu, located about 150 m further on.

(8) Walk along the lake and then turn left onto the path to reach the Route du Four à Boulets.

End of the GR®34 trail markings

(9) Turn left for about 100 metres, then take the path on the right (cycle path). At the next crossroads, follow the path on the right which leads to Rue de Plaine Garenne at a dirt car park.

(10) Immediately take the marked path on the left, continue for about 200 metres and then turn right onto it. Turn left and then right to reach Rue de la Côte des Pâques. Turn right again and continue to the crossroads.

(11) Follow the path on the left, called Chemin de la Côte du Haut Portuais.

(12) At the crossroads, turn left and then immediately right. Leave the Guen car park on your right and continue until you reach the GR®34 at Avenue Léon Hamonet.

(1) Turn right to return to the Plage du Guen car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

(5) The Trois Pierres guardhouse. Built in 1744, this building was part of a vast defensive system initiated by Louis XVI on the Brittany coast.

The lifeboat shelter nestled at the end of the cape, on its pebble beach, was put into service in 1935 and decommissioned in 1966.

(3) The Lortuais Fountain, dating from before 1785, is a structure made of cement and sandstone rubble.

There is much to see, so please visit the Erquy Tourist Office website.
