Tour des Têtes

The first part of the hike is sunny. At the top of Les Têtes, you can enjoy a 360° panorama of the Pelvoux massif to the north and west and the Durance Valley to the south.

Description of the walk

Leave your car at the Mines d'Argent car park.

(S/E) Follow the road west for about 100 metres.
Turn right and follow the path uphill towards La Blachière and Les Têtes.
After about 200 metres, leave La Blachière behind and turn left towards Les Têtes. The path climbs steeply but steadily, allowing you to gain altitude quickly. You will reach a flat area.

(1) You will see the ruins of the hamlet of Les Têtes. A few hundred metres further on, join a wide forest track and follow it to the left until you reach a junction.

(2) Turn left and in a few minutes you will reach the summit of Les Têtes with its breathtaking 360° view.

(3) Return to the previous intersection to rejoin the forest road.

(2) Follow it to the left as it descends north-west towards the Col de la Pousterle and the Vallée du Fournel.

(4) Near the small Lac des peatland, turn left and follow the signs for the Vallée du Fournel. After crossing a plateau, you will reach a wide forest road markedGR® near a picnic area. Follow the forest road to the left for about 300 m.

(5) Near the hamlet of La Pousterle, leave the forest road and follow theGR® (numerous signposts) which descends and crosses the road several times. You will quickly lose altitude.

(6) At the entrance to the hamlet of Les Clausas, continue down the path, cross the track again, go through three hairpin bends and arrive at a fork.

(7) Ignore the turn-off on the left (no access) and turn right. At the houses (Champ Didier), follow the access path to reach the road.

(8) Continue along this road downhill and reach the Mines d'Argent car park (S/E).

A beautiful trip with stunning views from the top. It's best to reach the summit before midday to avoid the crowds.
After the Col de la Pousterle, be sure to descend to the Pk without taking the paths on the mountainside, access to which is more or less blocked by a barrier

Hike completed on a beautiful day in August. We wouldn't say that the route is family-friendly, as the climb is quite steep at the start, as is the descent between points 5 and 7. The route is very well marked and fairly easy to follow. We didn't see a single soul on the way up. The 360° panorama at the top of Les Têtes is well worth the detour, but it was quite crowded at lunchtime (the Col de la Pousterle car park is not far away). We preferred to have lunch at Spanish hour at point 5, where there are several picnic tables in the shade. Although the barrier at point 7 was pulled to the side, we didn't dare take the path that descends to the left. So we followed the "official" route back to the starting point. The last part (a bit long) of the descent from Champ Didier is on a wide track. In conclusion, it is a very beautiful route, well signposted and with superb views.

A family-friendly, easy and very scenic route. The picnic on the plateau opposite the Barre des Ecrins and the white glacier is a real highlight!

A superb hike offering magnificent views and the chance to observe the surrounding wildlife. Done with two dogs weighing 10 and 20 kg without any problems. Be careful on the final descent, which is a little steep but doable!

the route is not very busy on the way up and down, but there were a lot of people at the top of Les Têtes today because the car park at the Col de la Pousterle is not far away. The route is not difficult but is quite strenuous with some steep slopes. There is a 360° view of the southern part of the Écrins. There were a lot of mosquitoes at the top.
the silver mine is at the start of the hike and can therefore be visited on the way back

Thank you for your comments. I have just redrawn the route and description so that it no longer passes through the prohibited and dangerous area.

The end of the route as described is DANGEROUS due to a landslide that occurred in 2021. The barriers preventing access are no longer in place. The municipal by-law prohibiting access to this path is only posted near the end of the route.
The route of this hike must be changed or removed.
We found ourselves blocked by the landslide due to a lack of clear information. We found our way back thanks to GPS, as mentioned in the previous review, but we have never been in such a tricky situation, walking on unstable ground surrounded by thorny bushes.
We did this hike in mid-April. The forest road was snowy but passable with good walking shoes. We didn't attempt the climb to the peaks.
It's a shame, otherwise it's a nice hike.

A beautiful loop but with a steep and long climb, and lots of flies when passing through the forests...!
The 360-degree view at point 3 is beautiful but very busy.
The descent is through flowers, with a beautiful view at the end near the hamlet of La Pousterle, surrounded by cows.
The official trail is not very easy to follow for the last two kilometres and the very end of the path was closed due to a landslide...so GPS is essential to get back to the car park safely.

a very varied hike with magnificent views from the summit, ideal for lunch.
Also popular.
The trail on the last part of the descent (from point 7) is badly damaged by heavy erosion, which is likely to get worse. It is best to avoid taking the right-hand path down to the road to reach the car park. It is possible to get through, but after heavy rain...

A superb hike, don't miss the end at point 3, which is the highlight of the walk.
It took me 4 hours and my GPS watch recorded a distance of 12 km.
The GPS was essential for getting to the starting point.
A barrier at the bottom and halfway down the descent indicates a rockfall and that the path is closed. However, the barriers are to the side and you can still pass the rockfall without difficulty, but at your own risk...
The plateau at the Pousterle pass is indeed perfect for a picnic
Thank you for this beautiful hike.

A magnificent hike, very flowery, with beautiful views throughout.
Two small errors on the GPS route: before point 1, you must follow the well-marked path. Similarly, after point 6, you must continue on the GR as indicated in the description. For the author: if you like, I have a GPS route (but without the detour due to the municipal by-law).
At point 7, when you leave the GR, a barrier blocks the path: a municipal by-law (dated 16 June 2021) prohibits access due to the risk of falling rocks. Continue along the GR to the road, then follow it to the starting point.

A superb hike despite the weather! The climb is a little steep, but once you reach the top, the view is well worth the effort, and it's all downhill from there! Be careful, as you have to climb over a rockfall at the end of the hike (after point 7). The time indicated is accurate. Definitely worth doing again on a sunny day!

A beautiful hike, the climb is pleasant even though it's quite steep because the trail is well marked. The view from the summit of Les Têtes is well worth the detour. A tip: be sure to check out the view from La Croix and then from the highest peak. The descent is very pleasant. We saw our first marmots of the year. Thank you for this guide.
