Tour of the cliffs of Baume-les-Messieurs

This circular offers no difficulties other than its length and features varied landscapes. The hike is divided into three parts: a gentle climb to the gently sloping plateau; a nearly flat walk around the cliffs; and a descent back down.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park of Nevy-sur-Seille Town Hall.

(S/E) With your back to the town hall, turn left (south-west) towards Baume-les-Messieurs. Pass the cemetery on your right and you will soon come to a crossroads.

(1) Continue straight on the D70. Take the bridge over the Seille.

(2) Just after the bridge, turn left and take the small road towards La Saugiat. Walk to the bottom of the valley and ignore a turn-off on the right. Cross a stream and then walk along it on the right-hand side. You will come to a hairpin bend to the left.

(3) Leave the road and continue straight ahead on a path that starts between a hut on the right and a wild boar sculpture on the left. Walk up the wooded valley, keeping the stream on your right. Please note: in September 2025, there were fallen trees across the path but they were easy to get past. The slope becomes steeper and the path arrives at a crossroads on the plateau, at the edge of the woods.

(4) Follow the GR®59 to the right (red and white markings) on a tarmac road.

(5) After about 500 m, take a path on the right.

(6) Come out onto a tarmac road and follow it to the left towards Granges-sur-Baume. Ignore a road coming from the right and go straight ahead (south), ignoring the other roads on the right.

(7) You will come to the D210 (Route de la Chapelle) and follow it as it continues. Pass the town hall and arrive at the foot of the church.

(8) Continue along the road towards Crançot. Pass a triangular crossroads on the left and the cheese dairy on the right. Stay on the main road (D210) and ignore all the turnings off to the sides. Pass the Jurafaune park and you will come to a T-junction.

(9) Then follow the D70 to the right. After about 75 metres, at the "Vieux Mont" sign, take a path on the right towards the Croix de Suchot. Follow the marked path, ignoring all turnings on the left. This will take you to the Croix de Suchot.

(10) Take an unmarked path on the left. Stay on this path which runs along the cliffs (be careful of the steep drop on the right). First head south-east, then turn west onto a marked path that follows the contour of the valley.

(11) At the crossroads, turn right onto a track, then immediately right (north-north-east) onto a path that temporarily moves away from the edge of the cliff. You will arrive at a viewpoint (very beautiful panorama of the Baume valley).

(12) Turn left, still along the edge of the cliff.

(13) Leave the path along the cliff and take a path on the left through the undergrowth.

(14) You will come to a small road. Follow it to the right, passing a house on your right. At the T-junction shortly afterwards, turn right and continue to the Belvédère des Roches (restaurant, picnic tables).

(15) Take the road towards Sermu and pass a triangular junction on your left.

(16) After about 300 m, leave the road and take a path on the right (north). Further on, turn left onto the path (west-northwest).

(17) Return to the road and follow it to the right until you reach a triangular junction at the entrance to Sermu.

(18) Take a small road on the left that goes downhill. Turn left, then right and continue downhill.

(19) Join another road and follow it straight ahead.

(20) At Grange Bedou, turn right and head north until you reach an intersection (cross).

(21) Turn right and continue north. Pass Rosnay and arrive at the entrance to Chez les Remondys.

(22) Then turn right (north-east; the markings are not very visible).

(23) At a fork, take the right-hand path which descends steeply to the hamlet of Les Essertines.

(24) Turn left between two buildings and ignore a path that branches off to the left. Follow a small road to a bridge over the Seille.

(25) Turn right and cross the bridge. Pass a dead end on the right-hand side. Join Rue du Moulin and follow it to the right.

(1) At the end, turn left onto Route de la Vallée (D70) and return to the car park at Nevy-sur-Seille Town Hall (S/E).

There are several sections of road (with little traffic) on this circular route, but the trails and superb panoramic views make you forget them.
A small correction at point (9): take the path on the left (not the right) towards the Suchot cross. Otherwise, the description is accurate and completely reliable. This is very much appreciated!
Climbing over the trees blocking the path at point (3) is the only technical difficulty on this hike.
In addition to the Roches viewpoint (14), there is a picnic table at the entrance to Sermu (17).
We completed this route in almost 7 hours, including a 50-minute lunch break.
A big thank you to "Visorandonneur" for this wonderful suggestion.
