Parking in Voiteur, Place de la Mairie, in the centre of the village. Yellow and white-red signposts.
(S/E) Take Rue de Nevy, passing in front of the church, which you can visit. Follow the signpost for Château-Chalon. Continue straight ahead on Rue de Nevy. Stop opposite No. 53 to see a statue of the Virgin Mary and Christ, then cross the charming old bridge over the Seille.
(1) Turn left onto the gravel path. Along the river, there is a place where you can get close to the bank and take a look at the arches of the bridge. Then turn left onto the small road that winds through the vineyards. It turns right at the signpost marked "Les Grevillettes". The road becomes concrete and you climb up to the left (signpost "Aux chaises"). At the next fork, continue climbing up the concrete road on the right. There is a lovely view of the vineyards and the Seille valley.
(2) When the path turns right and reaches a plateau, you will have a view of the village and, on the right, the hill of Arlay, crowned by the ruins of its feudal castle. When the road ends, continue along the path that runs alongside the vineyards. Watch out for wires that could trip you up. Then continue uphill along a new concrete road.
(3) At the foot of Château-Châlon, at the fork with a dead-end road, continue climbing to the right towards the beautifully perched village, staying on this path. When it ends, climb the path along the vineyard on the right for one last effort, which will be rewarded by the superb medieval houses of Château-Châlon. Push the gate to walk along the Saint-Pierre Church.
(4) Go down to the left towards the viewpoint over the vineyards and the valley, then go back up to visit the church. Then turn right into Rue de l'Église to admire its façade and continue along this street where craftsmen display their wares. Turn right into Rue Saint-Jean until you reach another viewpoint.
Retrace your steps and take the first street on the left to return to the church. At the magnificent lime tree, which is certainly two hundred years old, turn right onto Rue de la Roche and walk past the old houses until you reach another viewpoint to the north. Then turn left onto the D5 and continue to the last viewpoint at the exit of the village on the small valley of Fontaine Chambon.
(5) On leaving the village, at the "Village de France" sign (on the wrong side of the road), turn left down the half-stone, half-grass path. You will soon come to a fork (signposted "Au Verger"). Continue straight ahead towards Menétru-le-Vignoble, crossing the departmental road very carefully (cars come quickly) to follow the Roman road.
(6) At the field, next to a small paved road, take the gravel path on the left. This is a private road but it is a hiking trail. You will soon walk along an old wall and come out onto some pastures. Then take the path that runs along the edge on the left (mountain bike trail no. 6).
(7) Soon, along the path, you will see a beautiful long caborde (stone hut) and look for the openings in a wall on the other side of the meadow (on the right) leading to two other cabordes. A little further on, don't miss the small unmarked path leading to the unprotected Tuquière viewpoint . Stay carefully on the first part of the promontory, which offers a beautiful view of the Fontaine Chambon valley.
(8) You will soon come to a fork. Continue straight ahead on mountain bike trail no. 6, passing some curious standing stones. At the tall fir trees, there is another fork. Take the path on the left, which will lead you to the protected viewpoint of the Croix de Beaumont.
(9) Be careful! After a large oak tree, look for the signpost and descend into the woods via a path on the left, leaving the mountain bike trail. You will come across a gravel path below. Continue down the path opposite to reach Menétru.
(10) Go down the street. Then take Rue des Chalets and turn right into Rue de la Fontaine, passing in front of the town hall. At the bottom of the street is a superb fortified house. Turn left onto Rue du Bas, passing another beautiful house with a turret. Turn right at the next intersection. At the edge of the village, at a triangular crossroads, there is an old wine press and benches where you can enjoy the view of the vineyards. Continue straight ahead for about 100 metres and when the road turns right, continue straight ahead along the grassy path which leads to a dead end.
(11) You will enter the woods for a short while and soon come out above the sunny vineyards. At the bottom of the first vineyard, at the fork, continue straight down between the vines (mountain bike trail). Cross a concrete path and continue downhill on the wide grassy path between the vines. Then turn left towards Voiteur, enjoying the last views of Château-Chalon.
(12) At the retirement home, cross the Seille on the right and go up the Grande Rue until you reach the junction of the D120 and the D170, then turn left to return to the car park (S/E).
The route includes cliff-side paths and unsecured viewpoints. The paths are rocky and slippery in places. Sturdy footwear is essential and walking sticks are recommended.
