Tour de Roche Robert

A wild hike, partly off-trail, to an area popular with ibex, offering first-class views of the Montagne des Agneaux, the Pic de Combeynot and some of the Cerces peaks.
I recommend using the Visorando app.

Description of the walk

From Monêtier-les-Bains, take the D1091 towards Col du Lautaret to Pont de l'Alpe.
Park in the car park on the right-hand side of the road. "Parking spaces are highly sought-after in summer", so set off early.

(S/E) From the car park, walk down the road a few metres, cross the Rif torrent bridge, then take the wide path eastwards under the Aiguillette du Lauzet.
After a few bends, this path heads north and opens out into a wide valley, leading to the hamlet of Alpe du Lauzet.
After passing the hamlet, take the path on the left and cross the bridge.

(1) At the intersection, take the path on the left to the north-west towards the sheepfold (a clearly visible isolated chalet). The path on the right will be used for the return journey.

(2) At the next intersection, just after the Torrent du Plan Chevalier footbridge and before reaching the chalet, take the path on the right to the north-west. This path, which is difficult to follow, climbs up through the pastures.
Continue north-west across the grassy terraces towards a small pass to go around the monolith on the left.
At the small pass, the slope levels out and you come out to the west on a slightly sloping plateau below the south face of Roche Robert.

(3) Take a path on the right, which is initially very faint, towards the cliff.
The path climbs steeply north-northwest, winding its way up to the southwestern ridge of the rock and then running along its western face.
Continue your progress, staying as close as possible to the cliff until you reach its end.

(4) Make a round trip by climbing the ridge for about a hundred metres, on the north-northwest left. Enjoy this better viewpoint (ideal spot for a picnic).

(5) To return, go back to the end of the cliff you left earlier.

(4) Descend to the left into the mountain pasture, heading east, until you reach the Torrent du Plan Chevalier.

(6) Then follow its course downhill, south-southeast, until you reach the bridge you crossed at the start of the hike.

(1) Return to the hamlet of Alpe du Lauzet, then Pont de l'Alpe and the car park via the same route you took on the way up (S/E).

Notes

I made a video with the names of the peaks, which shows the route and the atmosphere of this hike.

What can I say about this route?
The climb to reach the south-west ridge of Roche Robert is quite tough but short.
The passage through the rocks requires caution.
The trick is not to stray too far from the cliff so that you stay on what resembles a path.
In terms of orientation, much of the route is off-trail, but you can always see the rock you need to go around.

This hike can be done without any problems with the description, map and compass.
However, the Visorando app, which is very good, can save you time.

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

A very beautiful hike that opens up to a superb panorama. Two chamois galloping on the cliff and lots of edelweiss. Follow the GPS track carefully as the paths quickly become hazardous, even non-existent on the descent, which can nevertheless be done by sight.

For the route, it is best to follow your IGN map or GPS, as the trail is practically non-existent once you reach the foot of Roche Robert; but that is also what makes this hike so charming, overlooking the Serre Che valley and Alpe du Lauzet. A great opportunity to encounter wildlife in its natural habitat.

Hike completed in August 2022.
The route is magnificent and very rocky in places.
If you set off early enough, you will have the pleasure of encountering numerous chamois, which are not shy if you approach them cautiously.

The descent is a bit random in the meadow.

A lovely walk to stretch our legs, and not far from our holiday destination (Chantemerle).

What's more, we saw edelweiss, a mountain goat and horses roaming free on the first day – what more could we ask for!

Following the guide left on Altitude Rando by Britannicus, that's how we incorporated it into our schedule! Thank you.
