Tour of the Isle-Adam Forest

This half-day hike takes you around the entire Isle-Adam Forest. It is not particularly difficult and offers beautiful views overlooking the Stors Marsh and a glimpse of the old quarries (be careful not to cross the safety barrier).

Description of the walk

Departure from the car park located near the D64, on the left when following it towards L'Isle-Adam.

(S/E) Take the path on the left (south-east), Route des Pavillons on the map. Cross a perpendicular path and take the first path on the left (Route Boby).

(1) At the next junction, turn left. Continue straight ahead for about 1 km until you reach the bridge over the N184. Cross the bridge to cross the road.

(2) At the end of the bridge, take the path on the left and ignore the two paths on either side. At the next junction, turn right and, after a few dozen metres, turn left. At the next fork, take the path on the right (south-east).

(3) At the next junction, turn right.

(4) Turn left onto Route André. Walk south-east, following a few small "roller coaster" bumps, and cross four perpendicular paths.

(5) At the crossroads, turn right onto Route du Poirier Greffé.

(6) Turn left onto Route du Tourniquet de Montsoult. At the next junction, turn right onto Route Boucault.

(7) At the Boucault crossroads, cross the D9 and continue along the path opposite. You will arrive at the edge of the forest.

(8) Turn right onto Route Tournante du Saut du Loup de Chauvry and stay on the edge of the forest.

(9) At the junction with Route du Poirier Greffé, turn left. Leave the forest, cross the road and turn immediately right. Continue to the edge of the forest.

(10) Turn left at the edge of the forest. Find theGR®1and follow it to the right. Turn immediately left and follow theGR® west then north-west to the D9 road.

(11) Follow the D9 to the left and pass under the four-lane road (N184). Continue along the road uphill, then take a path that branches off to the right and goes uphill (there is a barrier to prevent vehicles from entering).

(12) After a right-hand bend, leave theGR®1trail on the right and turn left (there was a burnt-out car wreck when I passed by). Continue north-northwest to the Porte Noire crossroads, where you will rejoin theGR®1 trail.

(13) Continue straight ahead with theGR® on Route Capitaine. Turn left with theGR® and follow the path along the edge. Walk along the quarries (do not climb over the barriers on the left as there is a ravine; take care with children or dogs). Beautiful view below over the Stors marsh. Narrow path normally closed to mountain bikes but clearly not respected (be careful).

(14) Turn right, still following the GR®. When it turns left, go straight ahead, diagonally to the right (north-east) onto Route du Vollard.

(15) At the second crossroads, turn right and follow the road in an arc, ignoring the paths on either side. Then turn east and then east-northeast.

(16) At the crossroads, take the road furthest away (Route du Hangar). Walk east-south-east until you reach the third crossroads.

(17) Then turn left onto Route Neuve. Cross a road and continue straight ahead to the starting car park (S/E).

A pleasant route with no particular difficulties. Not too muddy (except between points 9 and 10) despite the snowfall and rain during the week.
Many trees have fallen, probably due to the recent storm, but none of them really obstruct the route.
To be repeated in better weather.

Magnificent hike. Well-maintained trails. A car wreck is located at the end of the trail between the two cornfields, just before entering the forest.
Very little elevation gain. A 17 km route.

A lovely walk in a forest that I discovered.
Not too crowded, the route is entirely within the forest.
A breath of fresh air just 40 minutes from Paris.

Hi,
Great route for a warm-up. Very little elevation gain...
It's perfect.
On the other hand, it's a bit of a shame that the paths haven't been cleared. The vegetation is overgrown.
There's still a car wreck in the bend after the cornfield
Otherwise, it's great...
Thank you

This hike is best enjoyed on sunny days to appreciate the tranquillity and shade. If you visit in October, you can see several insects, including magnificent processionary caterpillars. The most impressive part of the walk is through the Stors marsh, particularly the quarries, which are now closed to the public... for a good cause: to allow the bats to sleep. The karstic landscape of this corner of the forest is a real gem.
Finally, you can still see the low walls built by the Cistercians in the 12th and 13th centuries.
No difficulty.

A pleasant walk, recommended on hot days as most of it is in the shade of the forest.
I should mention a slight inconvenience on the last two kilometres, which are difficult to walk on because they are on a sandy track intended for horse riders.

Thank you for your voluntary work in describing this route.
During this period of lockdown easing, we were looking to spend some time alone in the forest, and except when we arrived near the Stors marsh, we were able to enjoy the birdsong.

Many thanks. This allowed us to enjoy a lovely walk (4½ hours) in a forest we didn't know. The route was well described. There weren't too many signposts at the main crossroads, but with the plot numbers on the trees and the map, it was easy to find our way. Many thanks for all your hard work.

The advantage of Visorando is that you can install the app on your smartphone and let the GPS guide you so you don't get lost. Otherwise, you might as well buy an IGN map or a guidebook and use a compass. The description has been reviewed and corrected by the guide's moderators. I believe there are signs at major crossroads with the names of the paths. I indicated in the description that some sections may be muddy, which is not surprising in wet weather. It's easy to criticise the (voluntary) work of others, but doing it yourself is more difficult!

the description is too brief, and the names of the trails are not very useful because there are no signs in the forest
it is too easy to take the wrong path without a GPS to guide you
At this time of year, the trails are very muddy
