Les Ferjasses

This trail is one of the most beautiful on the southern slope of Tanargue. It is characterised by its easy ascent, its aesthetic appeal, its aerial aspect and the historical authenticity of its route. Another beautiful day's walking on the third highest peak in the Cévennes (1,548 m).
We stay at the bottom of the valley for the first half of the morning, then climb up the southern slope of Méjean, enjoying views of Mont Gerbier de Jonc, Mont Blanc, the Vercors, Mont Ventoux and the Gorges de l'Ardèche.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le Massif du Tanargue

Description of the walk

Start from the Laboule stopover lodge next to the church.

(S/E) Behind the church, you will see a cube-shaped glass house above you to the north. The trail starts just below this cube. You can also take the stairs from the community hall and continue along the road. Cross the road above and then, at the Granges trail junction, take the trail 10 metres before the glass cube and follow the yellow and white marked mule track. The climb is steady.

(1) After the Granges trail junction, take the trail that descends steeply to join the road at the bridge, descend and cross the hamlet of Les Abriges, continue to the hamlet of Le Serre on the main road until you reach the bridge over the Coucouru stream.
Leave the D124 road on the right after the bridge and take the Champ Blanc forest track (DFCI) towards Valgorge.

(2) At the first fork, take the left branch, do not go up to Coucouru. At the next fork 200 metres further on, turn right to reach the hamlet of L'Estrade.

(3) In the hamlet car park, take the small road uphill at the corner of the garage, then turn left and follow the road to Fraysse. Continue straight ahead, pass Mazel, ignore the first road on the right and then the second on the left, and you will arrive at a three-way junction. From Fraysse, the Valgorge sports facilities will guide you to the next hamlet. Follow the white and yellow markers.

(4) Concrete ford on the Rieu Pourchier stream and wooden ford on the Tanarguier stream (beehives).
Go slightly downhill, following the path to an intersection marked by an FDRP signpost, then take the Chalas-Loubaresse road.

Walk 50 metres along the tarmac road or cross the small road and follow the path between the houses.

(5) Turn right, cross the paved slanting street lined with large chestnut trees and rejoin the trail marked Sentier des Ferjasses (yellow and white markings).

(6) Leave the road, turn left and then right at the fork immediately after. The pace of the walk now becomes steady on this pleasant path used by herds to climb up to their summer pastures.

(7) Cross a renovated plank walkway and continue along the trail.

(8) Cross another renovated plank walkway and continue along the trail, which winds gently upwards in large, almost flat switchbacks.

After crossing a plank that serves as a footbridge, you will reach the highest point of Les Ferjasses.

(9) Leave the path leading to the Sommet de Méjan on your left (see Practical Information).

(10) At the track, turn right to reach an old yellow and white signpost marking the start of the descent of the Granges trail. This is not very easy to find, especially as there are many removable sheep fences along the trail.

(11) From here, begin the long descent down the Sentier des Granges to Laboule.
It takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes to reach the village. Don't forget to look up from time to time, as the view is unbeatable all along the way.

The descent alternates between passages through "fayards" (beech forests), ancient white oak forests, hazel woods and stream crossings. Every quarter of an hour, you will pass a barn in varying states of ruin, leaving you wondering what life was like for the farmers who once lived here.

Return to the fork at the start of the hike, where the path approaches the D124. Continue straight ahead and follow the path to Laboule (S/E).

Notes

If you want to shorten this day's walk, you can leave your car at the start of the Sentier des Ferjasses.

(9) I recommend climbing to the summit of Méjan to enjoy the magnificent view of many famous peaks and take a break with a view of Mont Gerbier de Jonc and Mont Blanc if the Rhône valley is clear.

If you miss the trailhead, you can find it by descending to the shepherds' huts in the centre of the Redonde plain.

This descent requires good footwear, and you need to be careful on the first section through the gorse.

On the way up, there is a section that has been renovated with solid planks (7) and a footbridge (8) to compensate for two consecutive landslides on the trail. Those who are prone to vertigo may feel a little uncomfortable on the footbridge.

Worth a visit

The peaks of Tanargue are home to the last collective summer pastures in Ardèche. Every year, more than a thousand animals come up here during the summer months. This area is classified as a sensitive natural area, particularly vulnerable between pastures, moors and mountain pines.

If the weather is good, at the Sommet de Méjan you can see from north to south: Mont Gerbier des Joncs, Mont Blanc, Les Trois Becs, Mont Ventoux, Mont Bouquet, Mont Lozère... in short, a beautiful 360° view during your break.

Visit the village of Laboule and its many artists and craftsmen.
Local jam (chestnut, raspberry) is on sale at the stopover lodge next to the church.

Accommodation available at the stopover on a self-catering basis or half-board for groups of 7 or more people in Laboule.

Thank you for your comment.
It is entirely correct to say that dogs are not recommended as there are sheep on the course and the footbridges could potentially unsettle them.
Thank you again for your helpful comments
We hope to see you soon

Superb hike with beautiful views. The descent is less pleasant but not particularly difficult. At the bottom, the path along the river is diverted due to fallen trees but is well signposted. Not suitable for dogs, as some rocky sections require the use of your hands. Many thanks to the author!

Up to marker 5, the hike is on gently sloping ground through beautiful chestnut groves. From marker 6 (Le Chalas), the slope becomes steeper but levels out once you reach the switchbacks. There are magnificent views throughout the climb. We saw several paragliders. The crossing of the plateau is short before the descent, which may seem a little long for some.
Overall, this is a superb route with magnificent scenery. Highly recommended.

Yes, you can do this route in the opposite direction; that's another option.

A really beautiful walk, long but very varied (allow yourself plenty of time to climb to the top of Méjean, where the weather permitting, the views are spectacular)
In my opinion, it might be better to do the route in reverse!

Hello, the climb may seem long and not very steep, but this is compensated by the beauty of the landscape and the quality of the trail built by our ancestors, which is a bit like a balcony in some places, similar to the Himalayas
Thank you for your comment, it's always good to know what people think.
Best regards

A very beautiful hike, the climb takes about two hours, with a fairly steady ascent that is not too steep but long. Beautiful view from the top. Very few people on this hike.

Back on this hike, this time in the normal direction.

However, I started off on the path that descends to Le Vignal. It's a bit crowded and sometimes difficult to follow (especially at dawn), but what a beautiful descent!

No problems on the route, apart from the weather, which wasn't great on Monday morning.

The top of the Granges trail is now a very nice trail, clear and well marked. A big thank you to those who laid it out.

two minor issues:
- the second footbridge is not at the indicated point, but about 300m after the first one (N 44.606450, E 4.128300).
- on the descent, after the second ford, you cross the Pialade again and follow it on the right bank. A little further on, you cross back to the left bank to rejoin the route on the map, just before the Grange de Lutte.

All in all, it was a very pleasant morning's walk with encounters with a few animals (young wild boars just before Le Villard, black sheep on the Ferjasses trail)

Hello, thank you for your comment. It's always good to know if the guidebook is useful and what can be improved as we go along... I will try to improve the description in point 5. It's best to rely mainly on the map, as it's safer... Best regards

A superb hike with a somewhat unusual pace: the real climb begins after two hours of walking! If you set off a little late in the morning, as I did, you'll find yourself having to stop for lunch halfway up the climb...
As mentioned, the climb is very pleasant because it is quite long but not very steep: you climb 700 metres almost without noticing...

I had trouble understanding the map in Chalas (point 5). I simply followed the road uphill and after three hairpin bends, I came across a sign for the "sentier des Ferjasses".

The views are magnificent in any case.

Superb walk.
The signage could do with updating, as the path is not always easy to identify, especially in autumn.
A few updates are needed compared to the latest IGN map.

A recommended route, which we did with a night's camping to enjoy the peaks in the morning.
keep up the good work.
