Description of the walk

Access:
The village of La Souche on the D19, between Aubenas and the Col de la Croix Bauzon. On leaving La Souche, before taking the bridge leading to La Croix de Beauzon, turn left and park in the small car park just after the hairpin bend.

(S/E) Follow the road towards La Sautellerie for a few metres, then take the path on the left towards the Col des Langoustines. The white and yellow markings are excellent throughout the circular route. Markers are found at every junction and the signs are clear.
Note: The path, which is steep almost from the start to the pass, passes through beautiful forests of chestnut trees at first, then beech trees. It also crosses a few scree slopes.

(1) You then reach a fork. The circular path continues along the path on the right towards the Col des Langoustines.

(2) At the pass, take the track on the left to the Col de Sucheyre. All along this track, a magnificent panorama of the Ardèche mountains unfolds before you.

(3) Take the path on the left which descends towards La Souche.

(4) At the first fork, La Grange, continue straight on, cross the Ruisseau de Rioumonas and carry on to a small road, following the white and yellow markings.

(5) Take the path opposite and continue to the next fork.

(6) Continue towards La Souche and Le Rabeyriol. The path joins a road which you follow for a few hundred metres; at the junction with another road, take the path opposite which descends to the next road, where you turn left to return to the car park at the start (S/E).

Notes

This hike is considered difficult solely because of the very steep gradient on both the outward and return journeys, but is easily accessible to any experienced hiker (no climbing, no ledges, etc.)

(1) To the left, a variant leads to Mont Aigu but is reserved for experienced hikers, and a sign warns of the danger of this route.

Stunning views wherever you look. The climb is steady but in the shade, and the view from the top is well worth the effort. The descent is a bit of a long one. The path is well signposted and both the description and the route are reliable.
A lovely walk – thanks to whoever posted it online

A magnificent route, even though the climb goes on for an hour and a half without a break... but the mushrooms were waiting for us by the side of the path! The first part of the descent was very stony and rather unpleasant.

We went on a hike on a damp day, so the path was slippery with loose stones; we didn’t climb Mont Aigu. We’ll have to do it again when the weather’s dry. Great

A really lovely hike with stunning scenery.
The descent was a bit ‘strenuous’ given the elevation gain and the loose rocks, but nothing too serious. However, the route was advertised as 7.8 km, but my pedometer recorded 14.7 km. No big deal.

A lovely walk. The main challenge is the fairly steep climb, though the path is easy to follow and runs entirely in the shade through a forest of chestnut and then beech trees. The descent is also quite steep.
To make it a bit more interesting, I climbed up to Mont Aigu, where the view is magnificent to the north, south and east. The path there is more of a mountain trail than a hiking path.
