Tour of Gérardmer from the Saut des Cuves

A long, challenging hike that takes you around a well-known town in the Vosges: Gérardmer. Nestled at an altitude of around 600 m, the town is home to the largest lake in the Vosges: Lake Gérardmer. It is also possible to take detours to explore the natural scenery. This hike offers a feast of rivers and waterfalls: the Saut des Cuves, the Saut de la Bourrique, the Cascade de Mérelle and other watercourses of varying sizes. It also passes close to several ski resorts, particularly during the first part of the circular route. Mainly through forest, there are also some rather pleasant views when the weather permits.

In winter, the track between points (6) and (7) is used as a ski run. It is better to take the track going up to the left at (6) and then the road to the right leading to point (9).

Point (13) Saut de la Bourrique has been closed by municipal order since 15 March 2024 for works; see practical information.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the Saut des Cuves car park at the entrance to the town of Gérardmer.

Green Rectangle markings

(S/E) Head towards the river and cross the road towards the Saut des Cuves. Pass through the gorge and past the waterfalls to reach a junction. Take the path leading uphill to the houses. Follow the fence on the right, then continue along the track to the road. Turn right, then take the first path on the left. Immediately turn right into the forest and head uphill to the forest road known as the Chemin des Quatre Feignes.

(1) Continue straight ahead, still climbing through the forest until you reach the next hairpin bend. Here too, head uphill along this bend. At the junction, turn right towards the mast and continue straight on along a track. At the fork, turn left. At the junction, turn left towards the ski lift and reach its summit at Le Poli.

(2) Cut across the road to stay on a forest track. At the junction, continue straight ahead to the first track on the right, very close to Saint-Jacques du Barat. Follow this track, then take the second left before heading straight ahead. At the next junction, head down to a picnic area.

(3) Head south-east along the path starting to the right of the forest road with a barrier. This path is a bit rutted. Follow the bends and reach the first descending path.

(4) Follow it to the right. It branches off to the left and curves around a long bend. At the next junction, head down towards the Chaume Francis ski resort.

(5) Walk past the ski slopes and follow the track to the right, which starts with a steep slope. This doesn’t last very long and the path begins to follow the contour line. Stay on the track until the next junction.

Yellow Disc markings

(6) Head downhill to the right. After passing through a tunnel for a ski run, keep to the right. Go round a building and turn left. At the next junction, keep right to reach the car park of the Mauselaine ski resort.

No markings

(7) Cross to the left to reach the first junction.

Red Triangle Markings

Keep left, then do the same at the next two junctions. Then keep right at the following two to reach Chemin du Sentier des Roches.

(8) Head uphill and continue to the junction.

Green Cross signpost

(9) Go straight on, then take the path down to the right. Keep left at the junction, then right until you reach the road. Take the path opposite. At the lane, continue straight on and head towards the Notre-Dame-de-la-Creuse Chapel, which can be seen from a distance.

(10) Go down the steps to the left of the chapel and you will reach the road.

Green Ring signposting

Keep left at the road. Then continue straight on until you reach a crossroads.

Red Cross signpost

Go up the street on the right. Ignore a path leading downhill, and take the path on the left which leads to the Col du Haut de la Côte, turning left onto the road.

Green Disc markings

(11) Stay on the path starting opposite. This quickly turns into a track. Pass the Yellow Triangle path on the right and a junction of tracks. When you reach the ‘lodge’ sign, continue straight ahead. Carry on until you reach a building and its path.

Green Ring markings

(12) Head down towards the Saut de la Bourique. Continue downhill to the buildings at Grange Mougeon. Go down to the right, then turn left towards the waterfall.

(13) Cross the stream via the footbridge and head back up to the road.

Red Disc Markings

Turn left, then right. Cross another road, then arrive at a junction.

Green Ring markings

Follow the path running along the contour line to the right. This leads onto a tarmac road.

(14) Follow it; at the fork, continue straight ahead, then keep left. After a marshy area, you’ll reach the start of the Medelle Waterfall trail.

Blue Disc signposting

(15) Please note, this section is quite technical. You will reach the waterfall very quickly.

(16) Continue downhill, crossing the river several times to reach the main road.

(17) Cross the road and head towards the restaurant.

Yellow Disc markings

Follow the path to the left of the restaurant. Walk along the left side of the lake and, at the crossroads, head back up to the road at the roundabout.

Blue Cross markings

(18) Follow the path going uphill to the left of the road. Cross a track to reach a junction.

Yellow Disc Markings

Continue straight ahead to Chemin des Fourmis.

(19) Continue climbing straight ahead until you reach the road. Carry on to the pass at the Pépinière des Xettes.

Blue Ring markings

(20) When you reach the pass, follow the track to the right. Turn immediately left, then quickly right to reach a gate.

Red Cross markings

Follow the track to the right for a few metres, then immediately left. At the junction, turn right to reach a fork.

(21) Head straight on and descend to a junction at a place called Miselle.

Blue Ring markings

Continue straight ahead until you reach a wide right-hand bend.

Trail Station Markings

(22) Take the steeply descending path straight ahead before rejoining the Club Vosgien markings.

Blue Cross markings

Continue downhill to the next junction.

Red Triangle Signpost

(23) Head down to the left towards Kichompré. Continue along the track to the bridge over the Jamagne.

No markings

Cross the river to reach the D423.

(24) Follow it to the right and take the first street on the left. At the bend, keep to the right and you will reach a wide path.

Signposting: White Rectangle

Follow this path up the riverbank. You will reach the junction at the Gorges des Roitelets.

Marking: Yellow Ring

(25) Continue straight ahead. Pass the picnic tables on the right to reach the Pont des Fées.

Green Rectangle sign

(26) Cross the river. Keep to the left until you reach the Saut des Cuves car park. (S/E)

We did this hike on 7 October 2025 in perfect weather.
This route is not too difficult due to its profile!
There are three points to remember or change:
Point 13: the Bourrique jump is very poorly marked.
Point 16: the descent to the lake is very dangerous.
Point 17: there is no need to go back up to the roundabout; just cross the road and take the path marked with a blue ring (as already indicated)
At the end, the Saut des Cuves is poorly signposted; we will redo this section...

The hike is very beautiful, but be careful, the GPX track is completely unusable. We ended up doing without it and were pretty disappointed because we wasted a lot of time looking for our way. I didn't notice that the track had downloaded properly and that many segments were missing. I don't know if it was my equipment or the track, but I recommend checking it carefully before you set off to avoid the same mishap.

A lovely, long but not overly difficult walk, offering the chance to explore the area around Gérardmer and its many chalets.

A lovely ride with beautiful scenery. The effort is well-balanced, but you’ll need a bit of training...

Hello, I’d already done this route in non-stop rain from the Saut des Cuves to the Chemin de l’Ourson – not exactly pleasant.
In glorious sunshine, it’s much nicer. Apart from at the lake, I didn’t come across many people. I didn’t go via La Mauselaine, but carried on along the GR above; there was still frozen snow on the ski slopes. First coffee break at the little chapel at Les Bas-rupt, and lunch break at the lake (picnic tables). A bit of tarmac, but on such a long route, it’s almost inevitable. Completed in 8 hours excluding breaks.
A lovely day

Point 13, the "Saut de la Bourrique", is no longer under construction; at least, I haven't noticed any access restrictions

There are a few tarmac sections, but they’re unavoidable

you can sometimes hear the sounds of “civilisation” a bit too clearly (cars, motorbikes, helicopters...)

Good level of fitness generally required; completed in 8 hours including breaks

Hello.
At kilometre 18, it’s no longer a blue cross but a blue ring.
Otherwise, a brilliant hike, I loved it.
Regards,
Franck.
