Gérardmer - Les Champis

First stage of the Gérardmer Mini-Trek. On this first day, you will discover the aerial landscapes of Le Poli and the heights of Lispach, as well as the isolated stubble fields above the Vologne Valley. This stage allows you to make steady progress towards the Chalet des Champis, where you will spend the night. It is also an opportunity to spend a night in an unguarded cabin that has (almost) everything to please: isolated and at least a 30-minute walk from any built-up area, in the middle of the thatched cottages, accessible to all and all year round...
It is a must-see in the area.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Boucle de Gérardmer - Mini-trek 2jours

Description of the walk

Depart from the Saut des Cuves waterfall car park, near the Aux 2 Sapins restaurant, on the edge of the D417.

(S) Head towards Gérardmer, then quickly turn left onto Route du Saut des Cuves and continue for a few dozen metres before turning right onto Chemin de la Passe du Cerf.

Green rectangle GR®533 signposting

Climb up through the Forêt des Rochires, cross a road and continue to a hairpin bend at the hamlet of Le Poli.

(1) Continue climbing carefully along the road, cross the hamlet and then, at the three-way junction, turn right onto Route du Relais. In the 90° left-hand bend, near the telecommunications pylon, leave the road and take the path opposite to reach the next fork.

(2) Turn left and climb to the top of the ski lift.

(3) Continue uphill, cross a forest road and follow the path to a track. Follow it to the right and stay on it. Go around the 90° left-hand bend, continue for about 400 m and you will come to a path on the right. Take this path and you will reach a small road with the car park for the Fontaine Ferry Nordic ski area: picnic area (tables, benches and fountain).

(4) Take the hairpin bend onto the 17 km forest road and follow it for about 1 km until you find a path on the right and a forest track on the left, after making a wide circular loop to the left.

(5) Take the path on the right, pass above the Chaume Francis ski lifts and reach the Biazot car park with its picnic area (tables/benches). Continue along the track to the foot of the ski lifts.

(6) Continue along the track towards Roche Ferranti. Continue uphill until you reach a flat area with a small road.

Red disc markings

(7) Make a sharp left turn on the road and, a few dozen metres later, leave it and turn right uphill onto the forest path. Cross the ski slopes and arrive at a large fork.

(8) Take the path that climbs opposite, cross a track (Chemin de La Courbe), and shortly afterwards you will reach Roche Ferranti.

(9) Continue until you reach the Route de Lispach.

(10) Descend to the right towards Pont des Saules and the D34C at the Biathlon Stand (covered shelter).

(11) Follow the D34C to the left for a few dozen metres, then take Chemin de la Ténine on the right. Climb up this wide, marked path for about 1 km until you reach a fork.

No markings

(12) Take a sharp left turn and, after about 600 m, you will arrive at a three-way junction.

(13) Keep right towards Chalet des Champis and climb up to the stubble fields and the chalet (E).

Notes

Club Vosgien trail markers

The route requires a fairly good level of fitness, particularly due to the continuous climbs and more challenging sections. The route mainly follows forest trails marked by the Club Vosgien, with a few more open sections offering views of the mountains.
