Terraube, Marsolan, Lagarde via l’Auchie

A winter route along the tarmac-surfaced but very quiet local roads will take you to the three beautiful villages of Terraube, Marsolan and Lagarde-Fimarcon. Fortified villages of the Lectourois region, rich in ancient stonework and historic houses, nestled along the gentle slopes of the Lomagnols.

Description of the walk

Start from the Place de Gascogne car park along the D42.

(S/E) With your back to the village, take the road on the left. Leave the road on the left leading to the church and the cemetery, then continue to a junction.

(1) Head downhill to the right, going round the riding school and tennis courts to reach a crossroads.

(2) Take the road opposite (D166), towards Marsolan and La Romieu. Follow this road to the junction with the Route de Condom (D7), just after the hamlet of La Fontaine.

(3) Continue straight ahead towards Marsolan. Follow this road (D166) which runs below Marsolan.

(4) At a Y-junction, turn right, leaving the D166 heading towards La Romieu on your left. Follow the Auchie valley and its mills to the foot of the fortified village of Lagarde.

(5) Then turn right and, 150 metres further on, turn left towards the castle via the small path that climbs steeply.

(6) In front of the imposing but ruined façade of Lagarde Castle, turn right to reach the hamlet of Lançon.

(7) Follow this road southwards as it descends towards Marsolan until you reach the junction with the D7.

(8) Continue along the road that descends opposite (south) to the hamlet of Le Tuco.

(9) Then head down towards the village of Terraube, which you can see opposite, to join the D42.

(10) Turn right onto this road to return to the junction you passed on the way there.

(2) Follow the route back to the village of Terraube and the car park (S/E).

The only highlight of this route is a visit to the pretty villages of Terraube and Lagarde. I stayed away from the village of Marsolan, which we bypassed. There are only tarmac roads, apart from the climb up to the village of Lagarde. The site of the Sourdet mill is a lovely spot for a relaxing break or a picnic. It’s a shame the route doesn’t take a path along the Auchie stream at the start, as it’s more pleasant than the CD166.

We should have looked more closely at the route
so we would have taken the bike, as there’s mainly
road and not much shade.
On the other hand, we had a lovely picnic in the village of Lagarde
under the lime trees.

A great route for practising Nordic walking in winter on country lanes, as the gradients aren’t too steep and allow you to pick up speed in the countryside, since they’re mainly located near each village.

Beautiful castles.
A detour via Marsolan is a must.
The walk took 3½ hours.

Beautiful villages in the Gers, but too much driving – ideal for cycling
