Park south of Camon, near the La Camonette snack bar, just before the long bridge over the Hers, where you’ll find an old ox-shoeing workshop and a fountain with a surprising inscription.
(S/E) Leave the village via the southern exit, heading towards Chalabre, and cross the large bridge over the River Hers.
(1) At the end of the bridge, at the large cross, turn left. Follow the river until you reach a junction with a sign for “Table d’orientation”.
(2) Turn right here and climb the beautifully cobbled track. Keep turning right at the various junctions, though it seems impossible to go wrong: large signs clearly indicate the direction. On the flat stretch, continue along the hillside opposite to reach the orientation table.
The site is magnificent, with stones arranged in a semicircle where you can rest and admire the extraordinary panorama of Camon, its valley and the Pyrenees – a truly spectacular sight!
(3) Head back down to the original junction, on the banks of the Hers.
(2) Continue to the right, following the river, until you reach the old railway viaduct.
(4) Two covered picnic tables invite you to linger, especially as a grassy area allows you to cool off in the nearby water. Caution! Do not go under the bridge; instead, take the magnificent wooden staircase on the right which leads up to the Voie Verte! Cross the river via the large viaduct, which offers magnificent, ‘picture-perfect’ views of the village.
At the end of the bridge, turn immediately left to head down the road at the entrance to Camon. Cross at the pedestrian crossing and head right for a few dozen metres.
(5) Turn left onto Rue des Remparts (signposted ‘church’ and ‘abbey’) – a fitting name! This street winds round the castle (private property) and descends to Rue du Moulin (children’s playground) before returning to the town centre. Head right towards the fountain.
(6) Go through the entrance gate and take the time to have a look around, continuing straight on along Rue Charlemagne. Then turn left onto Rue de l’Abbaye, which takes you back near the Town Hall and the Tourist Office. Return to the fountain.
(6) Turn right onto Grande Rue to return to the car park (S/E).
