Pays de Mirepoix - Lagarde-Camon-Leran

A winter circular hike. Very beautiful places, where five exceptional architectural elements are gathered: the Château de Saint Quentin la Tour, the Château de Lagarde, the fortified village of Camon, the Château de Leran and the Château de Queille on its rocky outcrop.
Please note: the bridge over the River Hers between waypoints 3 and 4 is undergoing repairs and will be closed until the end of 2017.

Description of the walk

Departure from Saint-Quentin-la-Tour. At the exit of the D625, you can park in an area opposite the tower.

(S) From the Saint Quentin la Tour intersection, take the D307 road towards Lagarde. At the junction with the D407, turn right. Head towards the woods and follow a forest path.

(1) Take this path on the left. This woodland path is clean and passable. Turn right when the path intersects.
The view of the imposing ruins of Lagarde Castle is impressive from the woods. Turn left and cross the fields to the D307 road.

(2) Then, about ten metres to the right, take the road that climbs up to the village of Lagarde.
All the streets lead to the castle, arriving opposite the access ramp built on a series of 5 to 6 arches. However, this access is blocked. A road passes under one of the arches and goes around the castle wall to arrive at a closed gate.

(3) Turn around to rejoin theGR®7.
Leave the village, then descend to the Hers River. Cross the metal bridge over the river and continue on to the old Lagarde railway station, which can be seen on the other side of the field, just opposite.

(4) Follow the old railway line, without rails. It may be a little monotonous, but it is shaded.
Arrive at Camon, a small fortified village built around its old Benedictine abbey.

(5) Set off again from the stop before passing in front of the old Camon railway station. TheGR® then passes through a tunnel, which is perfectly preserved and lit. At the exit, follow the road to Leran. Enjoy a beautiful walk through a wooded area dotted with meadows. Join the D107 at the hamlet of Patris d'en bas.

(6) Take it to the left. At Bambou, join the D28 and turn left to reach Leran.

(7) Turn 90° to the right, cross the river and pass in front of the castle. This magnificent castle has been converted into a condominium but is closed to the public.
Walk to the end of the avenue lined with plane trees, then follow the path that turns before entering the woods, turning right and heading towards Queille.
Used by forestry operations, this path was almost impassable, very muddy, slippery, with flooded low-lying areas. Barbed wire fences on either side prevented us from following it through the woods. All that remains is to be careful not to slip. Reach Queille.

(8) Cross the barracks and continue in the same direction towards Saint Quentin la Tour. Cross the village to the car (S/E).
You can take the path that climbs up to the tower (restored and renovated castle) of Saint Quentin, which overlooks the valley.

Notes

This is a 24km circular route, easily accessible except between Leran and Queille, which may be very muddy due to logging operations.
At this time of year, bring warm, waterproof clothing and a good pair of shoes, especially for the last section between Leran and Queille.
A pair of walking poles can also be helpful.
Allow six hours for the walk.
You should also bring an IGN map: 2246O.

Worth a visit

This hike, which has no elevation gain, has been classified as difficult due to its length.
Unfortunately, the castles are not open to visitors as they are privately owned.
Only the village of Camon offers a historical immersion within its ramparts.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

The route is monotonous after the few castles along the way. There is not much to see, with a lot of tarmac. Do not forget to visit the village of Camon on the way. The last part of the trail is not maintained, with brambles, mud and tall grass.

A route with great historical interest in the beautiful hills of Ariège.
In my opinion, the route is more suited to mountain biking as there are many kilometres of tarmac road but little traffic.
I would do the route again, making some changes, notably by heading towards Lake Montbel.

A beautiful hike that allowed us to discover the small villages around Camon. Many thanks to its author and to Visorando's GPS, which helped us out of some tricky situations. This hike is best done in dry weather because, in March, we encountered some muddy paths with large puddles. However, it is worth providing some details for future hikers:
1. At point no. 1, the path to the left is overgrown. Never mind, we continued on the D307 to the intersection where, on the right, you find the direction of the hamlet of Sibra and at this point, we turned left onto a beautiful forest path, marked in yellow, to reach Lagarde.
2° This hike is marked as "difficult" solely because of its length, but the elevation gain is relatively low.
3° This hike takes you along the greenway, which has some very beautiful paths but also far too much tarmac.

Kind regards

Hike to discover the rich heritage of this corner of Ariège (Lagarde Castle, Camon Abbey, Leran Castle and Saint Quentin Castle), lots of mud in the woods before Lagarde and after Leran, quite a bit of tarmac on the route but in a bucolic setting with virtually no traffic.
When you come out of the tunnel after Camon, turn right to reach Leran.
The map accompanying the description is very reliable, but you need to know how to read a map, otherwise be careful as it is easy to get lost, especially after Leran.
All in all, a very nice hike, albeit a little long, which could perhaps be done in two stages (St Quentin/Camon - Camon St Quentin) to better discover the historical heritage.
Thanks to the person who created this route.

We did receive it, as I even thanked you. It must have been a computer bug.

Thank you Jacques NELKIN and Lamisselo70 for pointing out the closure of the bridge over the Hers. I have added this information to the introduction.
Jacques NELKIN: looking at the map, we can see that after the tunnel (assuming that's where I think it ends), the greenway on the left, GR7A, goes towards Chalabre and GR7B goes towards Montbel. So neither of these two directions should be taken. It seems that we should have followed the small tarmac road that branches off to the right.
Did you have the map with you in addition to the description?
Please feel free to send me any suggestions you may have for improving the description.

It is currently impossible to cross the Hers after Lagarde due to work on the iron bridge, which no longer exists. I was able to cross despite opposition from the workers, but this may no longer be possible. This problem is certainly very temporary.
But above all, after Camon, there is no sign for Léran after the tunnel, as suggested in your description, but a fork in the road with signs for Chalabre on one side and Montbel on the other. In desperation, I chose Montbel, which was closer to Léran than Chalabre. The problem is that I arrived in Montbel without seeing any signs for Léran. As a result, I was forced to go around Lake Montbel to get to Léran, adding 7 or 8 km to the journey, which was already 25 km long. These 7 or 8 km were entirely on tarmac roads. The same problem arose after Léran, where the sign for Queille is not repeated at the various junctions along the forest path. You can also follow the river to get to Queille. I did this, which was very pleasant, and it takes you to Queille via the ruins of a "Catalan forge" with an explanatory panel.
So there you have it, a cruel lack of signposts...
Best regards

Beware of the destroyed bridge between Camon and Lagarde on the GR! It will not be repaired until the end of the year.
To avoid a 10 km detour, we crossed the Hers via a ford, taking a path on the left!

Otherwise, it was a very beautiful, very flat walk for the region!

Lovely walk, pretty village of Lagarde and Camon, the old railway line has been very well restored and the tunnel passage is impressive, but the castles are hardly visible, you have to forget about the one in Léran which is covered in scaffolding and the Queille path is really too muddy.

A leisurely trail run that took just over three hours to complete. The ruins and castles dotted along the route are magnificent, but the sections between them are long and a little monotonous (little elevation gain, long stretches of road). There was a lot of mud on the forest trail between Léran and Queille.
In my opinion, this route would be ideal for families on mountain bikes once the mud has dried...

A super easy and super enjoyable bike ride! A magnificent start from the Camon bridge over the Hers river! Magnificent view of Lagarde Castle! A very shaded ride with no hills! Picnic tables in Camon on the banks of the Hers with a view of the ramparts! Easy to do with the family!
