On the slopes of the 2021 Cumbre Vieja eruption

A round-trip hike starting from the village of "Tacande de Abajo". There is a green and white signpost marked SLLP101. LP100. Along the way, there are beautiful views of the ridges of the Caldera de Taburiente, Pico de Bejenado and La Cumbrecita. The return journey follows the same route. Warning: there are numerous safety signs along the route. Never stray from the path as there is a risk of getting lost.

This walk follows the coastal path. You need to park along the beach south of Santa Cruz. Then take the coastal path between the hotels, accommodation and the sea before enjoying superb views of the rugged lava coastline, with small coves and black-sand beaches. It is a very easy walk, suitable for children.

Most of the walk is easy, following a path through the forest and then along several craters without any difficulty or vertigo, before reaching Martin’s Crater Only the final ascent gets steeper and steeper – very, very steep towards the end – on volcanic gravel, but you can avoid it by taking the path on the left both on the way there and back.

The island of La Palma in the Canary Islands features a remarkable chain of volcanoes running north to south. If you can’t cover the whole chain, go and see its most recent volcano. At the southern tip of the island of La Palma, from the town of Los Canarios, head past the San Antonio volcano to reach the Teneguia volcano. The route, which is rocky, is very easy. The slopes around the volcano, however, are steeper. Bear this in mind. ⚠️ Update 18 May 2026: Access to the volcano from point (2) is closed for safety reasons. It is still a lovely walk, according to the reviewer.

Loop from Maison de la Zarza to Don Pedro. The outward journey is downhill, through lush laurel bushes followed by a view of the ocean. Logically, the return journey is uphill, but it nevertheless offers some fine viewpoints, notably of the Mirador de Dona Pola. The hike includes some (short) steep but not particularly technical sections, and a few fast stretches on the road.
