Teneguia Volcano on the island of La Palma

The island of La Palma in the Canary Islands features a remarkable chain of volcanoes running north to south. If you can’t cover the whole chain, go and see its most recent volcano.

At the southern tip of the island of La Palma, from the town of Los Canarios, head past the San Antonio volcano to reach the Teneguia volcano.

The route, which is rocky, is very easy. The slopes around the volcano, however, are steeper. Bear this in mind.

⚠️ Update 18 May 2026: Access to the volcano from point (2) is closed for safety reasons. It is still a lovely walk, according to the reviewer.

Description of the walk

Start just outside the hairpin bend on the LP 2091 road, just above the village of Los Quemados.

(S/E) Park the car and follow the south-east-facing dirt track, marked on the map as "Camino Natural de La Palma". The track will skirt the base of the San Antonio volcano on the right. You will reach a Fork in the road.

(1) Head down the track to the right, then follow the path, which brings you within sight of the Teneguia volcano. You will then reach the start of the climb.

(2) Continue left to the summit. ⚠️ Reported closed until 18 May 2026

(3) Return via the same route (S/E).

Notes

Arriving by car or bus: once in Los Canarios, drive down the road towards the “Centro de Visitantes Volcán San Antonio” (LP-209 road towards Las Indias, Faro de Fuencaliente)

When you reach the Visitor Centre, continue for a few hundred metres and turn left onto the LP 2091 towards Los Quemados and Volcán Teneguia.

At the first hairpin bend, you’ll find the Start/Finish point with very limited parking.

No water along the route; sturdy footwear recommended.

Alternative route: from the Visitor Centre: to the right of the centre before you enter, there is a path that descends to join the Nature Trail in 10 minutes (the climb back up takes 20 minutes!).

Worth a visit

The GR®131 allows you to walk the entire length of the north-south line of volcanoes. You can book a taxi the day before to take you from Los Canarios to the start point (“Refugio del Pilar”). After about 16 km, you’ll find your car back in Los Canarios.

But the GR®131 ends at the Faro de Fuencaliente, the terminus!

The Faro site is worth a visit for its salt flats and seaside setting.

If you have a car, once this short hike is over, follow the LP2091 road downhill through the banana plantations to the lighthouse. Return via Las Caletas.

Stop off in the village of Los Canarios at the café along the main road.

Pleasant route. Good footwear is required as the terrain is sometimes slippery or uneven.
