In the footsteps of Saint-Goulven

(S/E) With your back to the car park, head towards the church, which is easily recognisable by its 58-metre-high Renaissance bell tower. Enter the churchyard and start with a visit to gain a better understanding of the heritage you’ll encounter on this route. In the churchyard, on the north side, there is also an ossuary dating from 1709. As you leave, note an old inn dating from 1650 on your right (inscriptions carved into the stone on the wall); walk along the edge of the cemetery and turn right for about 50 metres. Before the roundabout, turn left onto a small road, pass a cross and, following a path, reach the D10.

Walk along this road on the left for about 100 metres , taking extreme care, and cross over (no pedestrian crossing) to reach the car park of the former station on the Landerneau–Brignogan railway line. Continue along this old railway track which runs along the back of Goulven Bay.

At the first road, turn left to rejoin the D10. First turn left then right to cross it, again taking extreme care (no pedestrian crossing). Continue along the small road opposite, then turn right to reach a T-junction near the D10.

(1) Turn left onto the small road leading to a cluster of houses, then take the grassy path climbing up to the right towards the Chapelle du Pénity. Turn left past the chapel and continue for about a hundred metres.

(2) Turn right onto a path leading uphill through the woodland. Follow this path until you see the sign for Fontaine Saint-Goulven.

(3) Head down to the left to admire this fountain and its wash house, then turn right twice to rejoin the path and follow it to a narrow road, which you take to the right until you reach a path heading off to the left. 20 metres from the path lies “Croaz Burzud” (the miracle cross), which gave its name to the nearby hamlet (a lovely viewpoint over the village of Goulven and the bay).

(4) At the end of the path, turn left, leaving the green-marked route, and follow a small road gently downhill to reach the town hall car park (S/E).

Goulven Church.
The Maison Saint-Goulven: this former Gothic-style inn was built in 1560. The vaulted passageway led to the courtyard and the stables.
